FIFA president Gianni Infantino has left the sporting world gobsmacked after using his opening press conference at the World Cup to offer a perplexing defence of host nation Qatar.

Infantino’s speech, in which he attempted to express his support and solidarity with migrant workers and the LGBTI+ community as well as justify Qatar’s hosting of the tournament, was roundly criticised worldwide.

The minister for silly walks – trying to walk both sides of the street at the same time and ends up looking a bit silly.

Everyone knows Qatar didn’t meet the requirements for a bid, and they won it with bribery and political interventions. It is what it is and FIFA’s image rests with it. Everyone said this at the time so it should be no surprise.

Yeah, poor fans. But they should have been expecting to not have the same liberties in Qatar as in other places.

Shocking isn’t it, with this last minute alcohol ban the Qataris look like liars and FIFA look like fools. I bet the sponsors are furious, being the “official” anything for the World Cup doesn’t come cheap.

Bit of whataboutism in this article:

n defence of Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup
It is a worthier venue for a big sporting event than other recent hosts

Nov 17th 2022

Migrant workers are often treated very badly. There is much less sexual freedom than in Western countries. It is not a democracy. These statements are true of Qatar, where the month-long finals of the football World Cup begin this weekend. They are also true of Russia, which hosted the previous World Cup, and China, which hosted the most recent Olympic games, last winter. In fact, Qatar is a much more suitable country to host a big sporting event than either of those two.

At best, Western criticism of the decision to award the games to Qatar fails to distinguish between truly repugnant regimes and merely flawed ones. At worst, it smacks of blind prejudice. A lot of the indignant pundits sound as if they simply do not like Muslims or rich people.

Qatar may not be a democracy, but it is not the despicable despotate of cartoonish editorials. The previous emir, under no popular pressure at all, introduced elections of a sort. He also set up a news channel, Al Jazeera, that is more outspoken than its Arab rivals, even if it goes easy on Qatar itself. That is a far cry from Vladimir Putin’s Russia, where you get sent to prison for describing the war in Ukraine as a war, let alone denouncing it. And it is a world of difference from China, where no peep of political dissent is tolerated. The Argentine junta that hosted the World Cup in 1978 threw critics out of helicopters.

The world also looks at migrant workers in Qatar through a distorted lens. For one thing, the emirate is more open to foreign labour than America or any European country. Native Qataris make up only 12% of the population—a proportion supposedly more enlightened countries simply would not tolerate. Although these migrants are sometimes mistreated, the wages most earn are life-changing, which is why so many want to come in the first place. And whereas hosting the Olympics twice has not made China more democratic, the chance to stage the World Cup has led to an improvement in Qatar’s labour laws.

The claim that Qatar is a den of homophobia is also misleading. Gay sex is illegal, it is true, but so is all sex outside marriage. There are few prosecutions for violating these laws, however. And such conservative but seldom-enforced laws are common throughout much of the developing world, and in almost all Muslim countries. Qatar hardly stands out.

Then there are the claims that Qatar bribed its way to World Cup glory. That may be true, although no clear proof has ever been made public. But if it is, it says more about fifa, the body governing international football, than it does about Qatar. The world is always going to have rich countries; it needs sporting authorities able to guard against undue influence.

The strongest argument against Qatar as a host is environmental. With the world overheating, it seems mad to fly in legions of players, fans and hangers-on to run about in new, air-conditioned stadiums on grass sustained by desalinated water. The hosts’ claim that the event will be carbon-neutral is dubious. But this is a vice of all big sporting events, to some degree. Thanks to clever engineering, cooling the stadiums is not as polluting as you might imagine. And the 3.6m tonnes of carbon dioxide that fifa says the tournament will emit is just 0.01% of global emissions this year.

Unless fifa wants the tournament to rotate among Finland, Norway and Sweden, it cannot always hold it in a blameless spot. The idea of bringing the World Cup to the world is only right. The Middle East is full of fans, but has never hosted the event before. Nor has any Muslim country. If the World Cup is ever to be held in such a place, Qatar is a perfectly good choice.

Fans paid to attend World Cup by Qatar have daily allowance cancelled

Fans who have travelled to Qatar as part of a controversial paid-for supporters programme have been told by Qatari authorities that their cash has been cut.

The Fan Leader Network is a scheme run by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the Qatari agency responsible for the World Cup. It has recruited supporters from around the globe, offering travel and accommodation and a place at the World Cup opening ceremony in return for enthusiasm and positive social media content. But the Guardian can reveal that a per diem payment for food and drink, upon which some supporters were depending, was cancelled just as fans were packing to travel to the Gulf.

Members of the Fan Leader Network from two European countries said their payments had been cancelled three days ago and that authorities had blamed the decision on the bad press which followed the revelation that fans were being paid.

If you can break the paywall the page has some audio that is informative:

The 2022 World Cup is being hosted in Qatar, which, as everyone knows, is pronounced KATar.
By Sarah Lyall

Nov. 21, 2022
Sooner or later the moment will arrive for everyone, or at least everyone who doesn’t speak Arabic but hopes to discuss this year’s World Cup without sounding like a total idiot.

What happens when conversational circumstance forces us to utter the word “Qatar” in public?

Is it Kuh-TAR, like guitar? Or Kuh-TAH, like the British pronunciation of catarrh, a phlegmy sore throat? What about the business executives who bang on about how you are 100 percent wrong and should be saying KUH-ter, like cutter (or gutter), or something that more approximates KAT-ar?

Why does everyone on TV seem to have a different answer? Can we trust random instructional YouTube videos? Is there a way to say it without adding “or however you pronounce it”? Why hasn’t FIFA issued a formal directive? It has been 12 years, after all, since soccer’s governing body started all this by awarding the sport’s biggest championship to a tiny Gulf nation.

But while a four-page phonetic guide created for journalists traveling to Qatar does offer a degree of linguistic relief — offering step-by-step pronunciations of handy phrases like “Help!” and “I was robbed” — it is silent on the name of the place where you might need to say them.

Let us stipulate here that the problem isn’t willful ignorance or cultural arrogance, but that the Arabic pronunciation of “Qatar” — قطر in Arabic script — is very different from the English one:

If you’re an English speaker, you’re probably saying it incorrectly, but only in the sense that your pronunciation of “Paris” or “Chile” would be considered wrong from the point of view of a Parisian or a Chilean.

Which means that the real question is: What sort of wrong is right?

“There’s no real guidance,” said Neil Buethe, the chief communications officer for the United States Soccer Federation, whose team has slowly trickled in to the country with the name the players wish they could pronounce. “It’s definitely been a debate.”

Yes, it has. Online, a Qatari known as Mr. Q has posted a series of videos for visitors, including one that begins, “I’ve gone ahead and noticed that a lot of foreigners are teaching foreigners how to pronounce Qatar.” He then shows a few clips of people saying “Qatar” in various painful ways on American TV and adds: “I respect you, you respect me, we’re all respecting each other right now — but no.”

Hassan Al Thawadi, the head of the Supreme Committee directing the World Cup preparations, said in an interview that pronunciations of “Qatar” vary even inside the host country.

This has not helped alleviate the general confusion among visitors.

“People were saying ‘KUH-ter’ when we got there for the first time last December,” Buethe said of his trips to the country in advance of the World Cup. “But we had many conversations with individuals and with people in the federation, and they told us it wasn’t correct: Don’t say, ‘KUH-ter.’”

Jenny Taft, a sideline reporter for Fox Sports, which will broadcast the World Cup in the United States, said the network had made a command decision.

“I don’t know who made the call, but we’re going with Ka-TAR,” she said in an interview. “I’m not sure why, but that was the decision made. And it is unique, right? Like, I probably was saying KUH-ter leading up to this. But Ka-TAR is, I guess, probably the more recognizable way the country is pronounced.”

Walker Zimmerman, a defender for the U.S. team, said that was what he planned to do, too. “I say Ka-TAR,” Zimmerman said in an interview in the fall. “I know it’s probably not the correct way — KUH-ter is for those who probably know what they’re talking about a little bit more — but I’m going with Ka-TAR.”

The German television network ZDF has taken a different approach: Its employees were informed via email that they were to go with KAT-ar. Martin Tyler, the legendary Sky Sports broadcaster who is working his 12th World Cup this year, said he would do the same.

None of these idiosyncratic decisions resolves the main questions, however: What is the actual pronunciation of the word? And what is our problem?

To begin with, said Sarab Al Ani, who teaches Arabic at Yale University, the first consonant in the word Qatar doesn’t really translate into a K or a Q sound. It’s actually a glottal sound, meaning it emanates from the glottis, in the back of the throat — a muscle English speakers don’t get to exercise much.

“What’s happening is that the very back of your tongue is lightly and quickly touching the roof of your mouth, creating the initial sound,” Al Ani said.

She suggested flattening your tongue and tilting your head slightly forward, to shorten the distance between tongue and throat. “It makes the distance as close as possible,” she explained. “You have to push your tongue back a little bit to create the contact with the roof of your mouth — just a gentle touch, one second — and then make the sound.”

The word Qatar has its emphasis on the first syllable, she said. Following that, the T is quick and explosive — “a dark T,” she called it, slightly hollow. To make the correct sound, it helps to un-flatten your tongue by curving it down slightly. The A is pronounced rapidly, and the R, Al Ani said, is “closer in pronunciation to a Spanish R.”

She proceeded to demonstrate a couple of times, and then said, encouragingly, that English speakers, even World Cup reporters, might need a lot of practice before getting it right.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, sort of, what are we meant to do with our newly engaged glottis, and our newfound knowledge?

The author Mary Norris, an expert in proper usage who is a former copy editor at The New Yorker, said that foreign place names can be tiny little pronunciation minefields. Use the American pronunciation and you might seem deliberately ignorant; use the native one and you risk sounding aggressively pretentious.

She mentioned the Kabul conundrum — Ka-BOOL? Or COB-ble? — and admitted that she has no independent information about the pronunciation of “Qatar.” “I’m sure that in American English we’re not expected to come up with an Arabic pronunciation,” Norris said.

She did say she had once heard her doctor refer to a country he called “cotter” on the phone. “I think he was saying ‘cutter,’” she said, “but in a Brooklyn accent.”

If all of this is just adding to your anxious confusion, please take heart from the soothing message imparted by an official at the Consulate General of the State of Qatar in New York. The official, who asked that her name not be used because she is not supposed to speak to the news media, said that every day she has to listen to English speakers mangling the country’s name in a variety of baroquely inaccurate ways.

But if you’re going with Ka-TAR, you’re fine, she said. (“Cutter” is less fine.) “It’s not your fault,” she went on. “Some letters in Arabic you don’t have in English, so you cannot pronounce it the same way we do. We know you’re doing the best you can.”

Are there actual rules in this game?

I’ve seen it a few times, it appears that your team has to fake an injury so realistic that the umpire believes it, then gives you the ball so that you can kick the ball to the other team so that they can fake an injury just as good.

After the time runs out and neither team has scored, you toss a coin at the goals to see if it was worth turning up in the first place.

This is the first WC under the new stoppage time regulations.

Under the new provisions, time is added on for any seconds where the ball is not actually in play. Previously, goal celebrations and referrals and deliberate time wasting tended to reduce the amount of actual play because such were not added to stoppage time. Indeed teams that were ahead sometimes tried to chew up time to lock in the win.

The new rules should basically assure that there are 90 minutes of actual play. It does mean that the amount of stoppage time is unprecedentedly high: about 10 minutes per half on average. Eng v Iran had 27 minutes of stoppage time altogether.

For the life of me I don’t know why football doesn’t do what other sports have done and just have a clock that stops when the ball is not in play. As it is the players get to 44.9 minutes with no idea at all about how much time is actually left in the half. Is it five minutes, is it fifteen? What a fun mystery.

After 90 minutes is up there is a screen that displays how much extra time is to be played, well they do that in club football.

Exactly.AFTER 90 minutes. So at 89.9 minutes you’re in the dark.

Aye.

German team probably wants to go home early.

It’s Qatar, no holiday paradise, and they’re possibly desperate for a decent beer.

Yeah i know, they need to have a rule that whoever goes to ground is out of the play, like they do in other sports.

They are not sovereign and independent country with their own parliament, defence force, and diplomatic and foreign policy apparatus etc. Regions should not compete separately on the global stage. There should be one combined UK team.

I am perfectly happy with the opposite arrangement, various smaller countries forming a combined team in order to be competitive.

Why don’t we also allow Quebec to have a separate team to Canada, or a Basque team, or Languedoc ?

That is not relevant here. I think the WOrld Cup should be open only to independent sovereign states, or voluntary confederations of ISSs fielding a combined team. I don’t think ti should be open to regional teams, even if they have their own distinct dialect and culture etc.

Even the commentators are in on the bullshit.

“Oh, you could hardly hear for the crowd noise”, which sounds all well and good over the TV. Then they pan across the play, and you realise that there’s only a real small pocket of the crowd who are above more than a murmur.

The whole shitshow is smoke and mirrors.

i’ve had the TV on with the sound muted. I was thinking the crowd was rather sparse tonight. Lots of empty seats, and those Qataris that have turned up look bored.

Thinking about that, Aussie Rules may be the only game, or at least the only game that I can think of, where having a runner on the ground may be the case. Perhaps due to the size of the field, other games just don’t have that advantage.

Only one i can think of is American football, where are so many stoppages and separate offense and defensive teams on and off the field that the coaches get to coach the players directly during the game. Most of the others the coach can only shout at the players during the half-time break.

They used to have runners all over the place gettin’ in the way of everything. They stopped that, and I think it’s only between a goal and centre bounce the runners are allowed on the ground now.

I saw a score in a match last night. 19 minute mark score nil nil.
Watched another program. WC match score at 50 minutes was, believe it or not, nil nil.
Returned about 40 minutes later. Still nil nil.
Bah! Humbug!

Well Qatar have been eliminated after two losses.
And they’ve still to play the strongest team in the group. Likely this will be the worst performance by a WC host ever.

In Group B, a scoreless draw between Eng and USA means all four teams can still have a chance to move on to round 2.

It’s passing strange that the outrage against Qatar at the World Cup is not emulated against the blood money the LIV golfers are taking from the Saudi Arabians with an even worst human rights record.

Isn’t it? I’ve read heaps about the LIV.

Obv it isn’t as big news, generally: the WC is by far the biggest single-sport event in the world.

Why it is forefront in my mind is that this arvo I was listening the ABC sports programme, they covered tha Australian PGA tournament where LIV golfers are participating and of course the World Cup.
When the talked about the WC it was 50% politics and 50% about the football, when they talked about the golf it was 100% golf, nothing whatsoever about the Saudi blood money.
I thought I’d mention it.

Yes, but nearly all of it comes from the PGA.

Seeing reports that people in China (still under lockdown) are getting extremely pissed off to see that the rest of the world is getting on with life and attending stadiums without masks or social distancing etc. So much so that the Chinese media are trying to blur out pictures of the crowd so the people don’t see much more of it. But very hard to censor a live broadcast.

The Chinese government is just trying to get the population used to being locked up. It’s been working pretty well at the test site in Xinjiang, and they’re looking to go live with it across the country.

The thing that the CCP fears most is the Chinese population. The CCP has never forgotten that it became the government through revolution, and that the KMT was ousted from government by the same revolution.

The deafening noise of the divisive pandemic era — leading into a toxic election campaign — had continuously amplified the voices of the angriest, most-disgruntled Victorians.

Quiet voters don’t get the headlines. They don’t make the fuss. They just get on with their lives, and they made the decision that Labor and its polarising premier were worth re-electing.

Going through the list of FIFA members I’ve found these that are not sovereign nations.

England (UK country)
Scotland (UK country)
Wales (UK country)
Northern Ireland (UK country)
Cayman Islands (UK territory)
Anguilla (UK territory)
British Virgin Islands (UK territory)
Turks and Caicos Islands (UK territory)
Gibraltar (UK territory)
Bermuda (UK territory)
Montserrat (UK territory)
Macau (Chinese territory)
Hong Kong (Chinese territory)
Cook Islands (NZ territory)
French Polynesia (known for FIFA purposes as Tahiti) (French territory)
New Caledonia (French territory)
US Virgin Islands (US territory)
Guam (US territory)
American Samoa (US territory)
Puerto Rico (US territory)
Aruba (Dutch territory)
Curacao (Dutch territory)
Faeroe Islands (Danish territory)

The extent to which Palestine is de facto sovereign is I suppose a moot point. Taiwan (known for FIFA purposes as Chinese Taipei) has disputed sovereignty.

Interesting to consider which territories do not have FIFA membership.

Firstly there are number of sovereign nations that do not have FIFA membership. These include Micronesia, Monaco, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Palau, Vatican City, Kiribati, Tuvalu.
Of these, Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Nauru do not have active football teams. The other five (including Vatican City!) do have official football teams.

Then there are some non-sovereign territories that are not in FIFA:

Greenland. A Danish territory like the Faeroes, Greenland’s climate makes it difficult to maintain a natural pitch but FIFA’s recent approval of some artificial surfaces may increase their chances. Greenland is trying to hook up to the North American (CONCACAF) federation. They do have a team and play regular friendlies. Of all the non-FIFA sides, it’s probably the one closest to joining.

Niue: NZ dependency like the Cook Islands. Used to have a team but not any more.

Tokelau: NZ dependency. No soccer side. More a Rugby place.

Three UK Crown dependencies: Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man.
Falklands: have tried to join FIFA but almost all of the CONMEBOL nations regard it as Argentine territory so it’s a non-starter.
Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha: one UK territory, spread over the Atlantic, with a low population. Saint Helena football team does exist though: they played against Shetland a few years ago.
Pitcairn Islands: UK territory, population of about 50.
Akrotiri and Dhekelia: British territory on Cyprus. There are about 10000 Cypriot civilians in the territory.
British Indian Ocean Territory: the only people there are military personal, the Chagossians having been expelled in the 1970s. However there is a Chagos Islands football team, made up of the Chagossian diaspora.

North Mariana Islands: a US territory that does have a football team and has applied for FIFA membership, unsuccessfully.

Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Norfolk Island: external territories of Australia that conceivably could apply for FIFA membership. In reality they don’t have association football sides.

Åland: autonomous territory of Finland. Has a football team.

Wallis and Futuna: French territory in the Pacific. Used to have a football team.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon: French territory in the Atlantic. Has a football team.

Saint Barthélemy: French territory in the Caribbean. Has a football team.

Saint Martin: French territory in the Caribbean. Has a football team.

Sint Maarten: Dutch territory in the Caribbean. Has a football team and has applied to join FIFA.

Saba, Sint Eustatius, Bonaire: “special municipalities of the Netherlands” that are in the Caribbean and have football teams.

And of course various Antarctic and near-Antarctic territories.

Aaand a second loss by Cañada means that they are the second team eliminated (after Qatar).

1-1 draw between Germany and Spain means the former still haven’t won a match.

Some of these upsets certainly make for an interesting third match setup. Several groups are “live” that you might expect to be sorted.
Particularly
Saudi 2 Argentina 1
Morocco 2 Belgium 0
Japan 2 Germany 1

I suppose a draw can’t be an upset but the scoreless draw between Tunisia and Denmark was an unexpected result, goven the gap between the teams in the ratings. Same for that between Morocco and Croatia or South Korea and Uruguay or maybe England v United States.

You really should have mentioned this to FIFA before the dickheads chose Qatar as the tournament venue.

I made the very simple but very reasonable assumption that Qatar would not be awarded the games as their bid did not meet the required selection criteria.

It’s the last of the group stages. Each of the two last games for each group are held concurrently so teams can’t contrive to finish second in their group and try to manipulate their opponent in the next round.

They always always do that in the final group games. If they don’t do that, the teams going second have a great advantage (and sometimes collude to engineer a draw).

Australia did beat Argentina at the Olympics last year. Obv that’s mostly an Under23 side but there’s quite some overlap in the squads.

From The Post’s Chuck Culpepper in Wakrah, Qatar: Australia barely wriggled into this World Cup like some gritty but gasping marsupial while Denmark came in after recent heights as a sleek, fashionable pick to go far, but then there’s sports, and sports always reserves the right to take your assumptions and shove them clear to Sydney.

So it goes that Australia, a country that knows sports arguably better than any other, is going to the knockout stage and Denmark, the fetching Euro 2020 semifinalist, is not. So it went that the yellow-shirted Australian corner of the 41,232 in Al Janoub Stadium wound up reveling Wednesday night in the Socceroos’ 1-0 win over the Danes that featured more Danish possession but not all that much flukiness. And so it ended up that the public address wound up playing a merry “Down Under” after the whistle, even if it did feel odd to sit in a country mostly dry and ponder the lyric “where beer does flow and men chunder.”

A keen DJ in the PA booth followed it with “Waltzing Matilda,” forever touching….

Of the 20 games Australia played on its journey to qualify for this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, 16 games were held abroad. Australia has been a member of the Asian Football Confederation since 2005, and its players’ passports include stamps from Kuwait, Taiwan, Jordan, Vietnam, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. But several members of the Australian team can claim an even longer journey to the tournament.

“Pressure is me as an 18-month-old baby fleeing a war. Pressure is me as a 6-year-old being in the middle of a war. Pressure isn’t a must-win football game because you can win or lose, but I don’t think anyone’s going to die,” defender Milos Degenek told ESPN before Australia’s Nov. 26 group-stage game against Tunisia.

Degenek was born in Knin, Croatia, in 1994. The city was the self-declared capital of the unrecognized Republic of Serbian Krajina during the 1991 to 1995 conflict that led to the breakup of Yugoslavia and was taken by the Croatian military in 1995. Degenek’s family fled to Belgrade, Serbia, in 1995 to avoid the worst of the war before immigrating to Australia as refugees when he was 7 years old.

“I can remember pretty much everything from that time,” Degenek said in a 2017 interview with FIFA.com. “Not knowing if you are going to wake up tomorrow because of the bombings. You would see a lot of crazy things the next morning when you woke up. A lot of things in flames. And a lot of things that a normal human mind can’t comprehend. You just have to deal with it at a young age.”

Australia’s national soccer team has long revealed the country’s migrant history. Its teams of the 1960s and 1970s featured mostly first-generation migrants from Europe. At the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, Australia’s squad included a roll call of immigrants from England, Scotland, Germany, and then-Yugoslavia—with Australian-born players a minority. Decades later, Australia’s 2006 “golden generation”—who reached the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time ever—included just one player born outside Australia, New Zealand-born Archie Thompson. But the team nevertheless championed its multicultural origins. Soccer was a constant presence in migrant families, and Australian-born children and grandchildren played soccer rather than rugby or Australian rules football. Media coverage at the time celebrated how this particular team reflected Australia’s makeup rather than the cricket or rugby teams.

Australia’s 2022 squad is diverse once again. And if the results of today’s group stage matchups hold, the team may also advance to the knockout rounds. Four players were born in Africa, and three of those were refugees. Forward Awer Mabil was born in 1995 in the United Nations-run Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya after his family fled war in Sudan. Mabil lived at Kakuma until the age of 10, when his family received asylum in Australia. Defender Thomas Deng was similarly born in Kenya in 1997 to parents who had fled Sudan and moved to Australia in 2003.

Garang Kuol is the third Australian player with Sudanese heritage. Kuol was born in Egypt to South Sudanese parents in 2004 before moving to Australia with his family at the age of 6. Twelve years later, during the closing minutes of Australia’s 4-1 loss to France last week, he took the field to become the youngest player to represent the Socceroos at a World Cup. After Australia qualified for the tournament in June 2022, Mabil said the country had given him and his family “a chance of life.” In January, he will join the English Premier League Newcastle United.

“On the journey my mum and her parents went through to reach the camp, many people died,” Mabil told the Guardian in an interview. “They were captured by the rebels trying to leave. The way they escaped, we could talk about it all night. It sounds like something from a movie, but it’s something they actually went through. The war, the journey, what they faced. For me, hearing it, it’s like: ‘Woah.’ What people do to keep their kids safe, what they sacrifice to give them a better life. They didn’t know how long they would be in the refugee camp; they thought they would return home. But there’s no returning home.”

The racial makeup of Australia’s 2022 team reveals an uncomfortable truth about the country’s immigration history. In 1901, the Immigration Restriction Act became one of the first laws of the new Australian federation. Alfred Deakin, then attorney-general and soon-to-be prime minister, said the new law “means the prohibition of all alien colored immigration … the policy of securing a ‘white Australia.’” It was not until 1975 that the Gough Whitlam government formally ended the policy with the introduction of the Racial Discrimination Act. Local Black faces are rarely seen in mainstream media in Australia, and while Australians with Indigenous or Pacific Islander heritage have played prominent roles in the sport, it is only in recent years that African Australians have stepped into the spotlight.

Australia’s more recent policies toward refugees and asylum-seekers have also been mired in controversy. Players like Mabil entered Australia through formal offshore refugee application programs, but informal arrivals to Australia face huge hurdles that have often proved insurmountable. The government began detaining asylum-seekers who arrived on the country’s shores by boat in 1992. The policy was politicized and hardened by then-Prime Minister John Howard, who governed from 1996 to 2007, and had a no-compromise approach to asylum-seekers who arrived in Australia by boat.

In 2001, in the run-up to the federal election, Howard’s government refused to grant permission to the MV Tampa, a Norwegian cargo ship, to enter Australian waters. The Tampa had rescued more than 400 mostly Afghan refugees from a fishing vessel stranded in the Indian Ocean. Australia’s stance sparked a diplomatic incident among Australia, Norway, and Indonesia over which country had responsibility for the initial rescue and subsequent destination of the asylum-seekers. Ultimately, New Zealand accepted many of the refugees with the remainder detained by Australia on the Pacific island of Nauru. In another incident in 2001, top officials in the Howard government claimed refugees had thrown “children overboard” when a Royal Australian Navy ship intercepted another boat carrying asylum-seekers. An Australian Senate inquiry later found the story to be untrue.

“We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come,” Howard said in 2001, announcing what would become known as Australia’s Pacific Solution. It included establishing an Australian-run offshore detention center on Nauru, the third-smallest country in the world, and on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island. The Manus Island facility became infamous for its brutality—in 2014, an asylum-seeker was murdered by facility workers during a riot protesting living conditions, and in 2015, detainees held a hunger strike by sewing their lips together—and was briefly shuttered between 2008 and 2012. In 2021, the Australian government handed control of the Manus Island facility to the government of Papua New Guinea. Nauru’s detention center remains open.

The Pacific Solution has remained popular with the Australian electorate even as asylum-seekers are held indefinitely without charge and criticism that conditions are inhumane remain. Detention centers on Australian soil have also been criticized for being dangerous; asylum claims take an average of 761 days to process, and asylum-seekers are held in what are effectively jails for that time. The new prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has said he’s investigating alternatives.

Australia’s soccer players put a positive face on the refugee experience in Australia, and Mabil acknowledges that his story is alluring to the media.

“I’ve got that title now of ‘oh, refugee kid,’” he told the Guardian. “It’s more for the headlines, for people to try to feel sorry for me, but they never try to understand who I am. … I want to tell that story too, inspire people from my country, my mother’s country, around the world.”

Mabil, Deng, and Kuol are prominent positive examples of African Australian success. Since the mid-1990s, approximately 30,000 people identifying as South Sudanese have immigrated to Australia. The community has produced top athletes in multiple sports, fashion models, musicians, and prominent lawyers. It has also been marginalized, associated with crime and violence in the media, and subjected to racism.

“There were times where I’d play for Victory on the weekend, then I’d be walking through the shops and there will be security guards looking at me strangely or following me around, thinking that I’m going to steal something,” Deng said in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “I’ve had that multiple times in my life, but I’ve just learned to ignore it. … I’ve tried to block it out.”

It’s passing strange that the bookies have odds for a draw in upcoming matches.
Maybe it means they will pay out on a draw if it goes to penalty shoot outs.

It is a stupid game and a nil all draw is the most likely outcome.

What is the point?

Well, as it turns out, Australian Football has an actual point post. If the player doesn’t get a goal, but nearly did, they can get a near miss/point.

Instead of a nil-all draw, at least there is a result.

At bet365 their headline odds for the knockouts are “at full time” ie before extra time, before penalties. If you want to bet on win/lose, you basically need to bed on “progresses to next round “ which is in a different area.

Well, very surprised that South Korea got through as they had a pretty narrow window. They beat Portugal 2-1 (with their second goal in injury time) and Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0.

This meant SK and Uruguay were tied in points and also tied in goal difference. Had to go to the next tie breaker: SK had scored more goals altogether so they go through.

This is the first time in history that 3 sides from the Asian football confederation have gone through to Round 2.

BRAZIL 0-1 CAMEROON

Vincent Aboubakar headed in a stoppage-time winner and was then sent off as Cameroon claimed a memorable 1-0 victory over favourites Brazil at the World Cup on Friday, but still failed to go through to the last 16.

Aboubakar, who had come in to captain Rigobert Song’s team, connected with a cross from substitute Jerome Ngom Mbekeli to break the deadlock in the 92nd minute at Doha’s Lusail Stadium.

He was booked for removing his shirt in the wild celebrations that followed and, having already been cautioned, had to leave his teammates to see out the remainder of the game.

They did so to record a famous win but Switzerland’s 3-2 win over Serbia at the same time meant the Swiss advanced from Group G along with already-qualified Brazil.

Having won their first two matches in Qatar, Brazil topped the group and advance to a last-16 tie against South Korea when their many key players who were rested for this game will return.

Do you give us more than the chance provided by the fact that we are playing against Argentina in the final 16 for the first time.

Head-to-head

Played: 7
Wins: 1
Draws: 1
Losses: 5

But only one of these matches was in the world cup.. 1993 | 1-1 draw | FIFA World Cup Qualifying Intercontinental Play-off | First-leg.

Those Argentinians know that if they lose to Australia, they’re finished.

Their families will disown them, their government will ignore them, the entire population of Argentina will despise them and treat them like Biblical lepers.

Lose to Saudi Arabia? Well, you can write that off as politics, oil, all that sort of thing, no harm done, still in the running.

Lose to Australia? Howls of derisive laughter, Bruce.

Yeah. Rules were kind of necessary, and actively encouraged by governments. In the colonial days in Australia the risks of serious injury was viewed with some anxiety. Organised sporting codes with rules were given grants of land to get set up.

After a scoreless match including extra time, Morocco beats Spain in a penalty shoot out. So this is quite an upset.
This is also the first time Morocco will feature in the quarterfinals of a WC.

I think that they should continue to use the shootout as a method of deciding the match.

But, the people taking the shots and defending the goals should be volunteers, or maybe randomly selected, from among the supporters in the stands.

A chance for the average boofhead, the grandstand expert, to be either the hero of the nation, famed as the one who won the match for ‘their’ team, or to live in infamy for all their days, reviled as the one who lost the match. Who dares to try, when push comes to shove?

IMO Replace the penalty shootout by sending the goalies off. Then in a few minutes the score goes from 0 0 to 8 6.

On Saturday you have the first semi-finals.
Brazil v Croatia, Brazil will have too much class
Argentina v Netherlands I think The Netherlands could upset Argentina in a close one.
Then on Sunday you’ve got
England v France, France should be too fast for England. If France don’t implode they should go through.
Then it’s Morocco v Portugal. Portugal for mine and Ronaldo might not even get a run.
So for mine the semi-finals should be
France v Portugal, France in a tight one.
Brazil v Netherlands, Brazil for mine.
The final
Brazil v France, Brazil should prevail.

Brazil’s out: that PWM is a hack!

You might recall that when Brazil lost the semifinal in 2014 7-1 v Germany, a lot of Brazilian supporters expressed fury against the manager Scolari.

I think this was a bit unfair because so far this millennium the only times Brazil even reached the semifinal was under Scolari’s watch: when they won in 2002 and when they came 4th in 2014.

All the other times they’ve lost at the quarter-final stage.

They are the number 1 team in the world: both by FIFA’s rankings and ny the more evidence based Elo rankings. I don’t know why they can’t seal the deal.

The vice-president of the EU Parliament has been charged with corruption after Belgian police found ‘bags of cash’ in her home.
Greek socialist MEP Eva Kaili, 44, is one of four suspects to have been charged and detained in relation to a police investigation into alleged lobbying by World Cup hosts Qatar.
Belgian police are investigating allegations that figures working on behalf of Qatar have paid European politicians huge bribes to influence the Brussels policy debate.

The chaps run a tight ship.
If they see one of the chaps doing a spot of fraud or corruption or other malfeasance they won’t muck around, they’ll have him straight out to lunch.

I see the soccer bosses in Australia are doing what they normally do. The AFL & NRL must be well pleased.

Argentina makes it to its sixth World Cup Final with a 3-0 win over Croatia. They’ll play WC champions France.

Croatia v Morocco for 3rd place.

Despite the even scoreline after extra time, kind of seemed to me that Argentina was the better team, so it was justice that they won the shoot out.

Messi ends his career with a WC win. Mbappe wins golden boot with 8 goals in the tournament, including a hattrick in the final. This is the second hattrick in a WC final, following Hurst in 1966.

Boss lady pointed out to me that the only teams to beat Australia in the tournament were the two who appeared in the final.

Also, at 24 years old, Kylian Mbappé is quite near the top of the all time WC goalscorers list. He can reasonably expect to play in three more tournaments.
