I’ve been using projectors since the 1980s, and seen them come a long way. Back then, they were the size of a small suitcase, with three colour guns (RGB) and three big lenses, needing constant adjustment.

In more recent years, i can say that Sanyo, Epson and Samsung are the go for reliability, and pretty easy to use (but then they all are, really)

Check the output ports on your video source, and compare with what’s on the machines you’re interested in. As you probably know, it’s all HDMI and DisplayPort on current-day gear, but if you find that e.g. your DVD player has only VGA output (unlikely), at least you’ll know what cabling you’re going to need.

Okies Trev.

Some questions.

Do you want to watch it in the daytime?
What “source” will the “movies” come from? TV broadcasts? VHS? DVD? Blue-ray? 4K net streaming?
How big do you want the picture?
What do you intend to project it on to?
Booming cinema sound quality that will lift the house off it’s foundations? or a cuppla bedside clock radio speakers?

Forget those $159 LCD projectors you can get from the post office.

You won’t get much change out of $1200+ for HD and at least $3.5K for UHD/4K just for the projector. Then there’s the sound system and screen.

Don’t yet worry about LCD/DLP or laser just yet. Get these Q & A out of the way first.

BTW… forget using a nailed up white bedsheet for a screen.

I’m hoping I can just shove a chrome cast (hdmi?)into the thing and cast to it. I don’t have a DVD player anymore

If it’s got HDMI input (of course it’ll have that; this is 2022) then you can almost certainly get Chromecast or similar to work with it. The gubbiins of the machine work just like your TV, after all. Check with the retailer, or even with the manufacturer.

Chromecast is fine. You can control it from your streaming services via your phone. Don’t forget about sound. These projectors don’t have much more than beside clock radio speakers in them.

Do you already have a 5.1 (at least) surround sound system? Does it have HDMI inputs in out, and a HDMI out?

No day time stuff really just something for summer nights.

1.2 k is OK. I figured sound would be extra but that can be worked on after the visuals are sorted.

Screen too.figured that would be an added on cost. Looking at about 2m across…..Just want get the projector done for now tbh

Don’t despair, Trev.

To some extent, you do get what you pay for, but like everything else, there’s a point of diminishing returns.

Sure, you could spend $5,000 instead of $3,000, but does the idea of doing without that fractional improvement in video and sound quality bug you that much?

I suggest that you visit an ‘audio-visual specialist retailer’, if only for the experience. Or anywhere that has a ‘demonstration lounge’ set up. They can show you a range of variously-priced projectors, and you can judge for yourself what level of technical refinement will meet your needs.

A dedicated sound system is a boon, but you can also improvise/adapt/overcome.

I hooked an LED projector up to my home stereo amplifier and speakers, and i reckon it was just about as good as any suburban cinema, within the confines of the lounge room.

Yeah, unless you’re an ‘AV nut’, a low-middling priced device would probably satisfy the occasional video urge. I suggest that $1,000 is a reasonable budget for that. Gosh, i can remember when devices that people wouldn’t spare a glance for these days went for $10,000.

Still a good idea to get a demo, if you can, particularly with some ambient light about. As Woodie says, you don’t want a projector from which the image is visible only inside a darkened coal-mine at midnight.

2 metres? Is that all????? 😁

BTW…. These things are not necessarily designed to tolerate being mounted outdoors, even if they are under cover. They are sensitive to humidity and dust. Replacement globes can be pricey. $250+ each.

I have an Epson 3D HD 1080p LCD projector mounted on the ceiling in the loungeroom. Projecting onto something similar to this

Then there’s the sound.

Replacement globes can be pricey.

Although…

…when the globes in some of the video projectors at the hospital went bung (older Sanyos, admittedly), a local AV outfit charged us $500 to replace them. Approx. $250 for the globe, approx. $250 for the fitting, with a 3 week delay.

I got curious, and went onto e-Bay. And i purchased, at my own expense, a suitable globe for $33 from China. It took about 3 weeks to arrive. And, when it became necessary, i fitted it myself in less than 15 mins.

Just as an experiment. AFAIK, that globe is still OK.
