Subject: Pop music genre?

I’m looking for the name of a Pop music genre.

The genre is ‘popular 20th century piano and voice’
It can be extended to include acoustic guitar or other acoustic instruments with voice. Or keyboard with voice.

So it includes:
church, accompanied choir, wartime, musicals, bananas in pyjamas,
Sinatra, Dean Martin, Seekers, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bette Midler,
Winifred Atwell, Scott Joplin, some jazz.

It pointedly excludes classical music, eg. Messien ‘Poèmes pour Mi’
And pointedly excludes electric guitar eg. Elvis, Beatles, Abba, Michael Jackson.
And excludes ‘world music’.

My daughter flatly refuses to call it “popular” or “Pop”. I need a better name for the genre.

Do you include Neil Young, or Joni Mitchell, or Paul Simon, or even that Dylan bloke?

Don’t feel forced to either include or exclude them. No objections to including them.

In that case I’ll go for contemporary folk.

Even if Scott Joplin isn’t all that contemporary.

Why does your daughter refuse to call it popular or pop if that’s what it is?

Although I know where those two achieved their fame, and I know their music fairly well, I have no idea which bits I should attribute to Dave, and which to Roger.

They also had a brilliant keyboardist, singer/songwriter and arranger.. Rick Wright

Dave is better looking, has a better voice & is one hellova guitarist
but his lyrics are like Moon, June, Spoon, Soon….
Roger’s lyrics change the world

Roger wrote almost all of the lyrics after Syd Barrett left. Dave was happy to say, “Thanks to Roger whose words we sing every night”.
