Subject: Millipedes by night

Bushwalkers in NSW have accidentally discovered Australia’s first known bioluminescent millipedes.

While bioluminescence has been observed in millipedes elsewhere in the world, this is the first time it’s been recorded in Australia.
They were first spotted by Scott Kemp 18 years ago. But it wasn’t until a chance encounter with bioluminescence photographer and amateur astronomer, David Finlay, that Scott realised that this was a find new to science.

The world knows relatively little about millipedes. In fact only last year a team, which included #TeamCSIRO’s Dr Juanita Rodriguez, discovered the first millipede with more than 1000 legs.

We’re currently studying the chemicals that millipedes produce. We’re looking for molecules that could be used as antimicrobials against virulent and antibiotic resistant pathogens.
