It means to be frozen in place. “Stock Still”
in nature, predators that hunt by sight detect prey via movement
FAST Forward to the modern era;
Deer hear vehicle approaching and FREEZES
One thing that was tried was noise making devices the deer pick up
at a great enough distance to react appropriately: To quote Monty Python; “RUN AWAY!!!!”
Have they tried lacing the salt licks or bait with a contraceptive to control the population?

Only place I’ve ever seen a wild deer.
There are feral deer around this area. We’ve seen them down near our covenanted bush. Someone local (yes, I do know who) brought some in to their unfenced bush block in order to have hunting. They of course didn’t stay where they were put. They are also in the Grampians.

They are all over the Illawarra! They roam the streets…

Hunting. I know a blike who was shot in the head because someone thought he was a deer.

He wasn’t the only one. People have been shot and run over by deer hunters.
