Does Crimea count towards Ukraine andor Russia¿
What if it’s all before Balkanisation¿
Do Taiwan (mainland) and West Taiwan count as 1 or 2¿
Do refueling and airport stops count? Technically I’ve been to Malaysia, but only the airport to catch a connecting flight. I did not leave the airport.

Some places have transit holding lounges. You get funneled in there, and you wait for your connection, but you can’t leave. So, you’re out of the plane and into the airport, but you don’t go through immigration.

Well, I think I’ll offer a ruling on them too. I understand the different cultural and political of each region, but today they form a single unitary state ruled from London. In spite of devolution the various regional assemblies have less independence and legal rights than the states od Australia or the US or Germany with respect to the federal government. So if you count Scotland, Wales and NI separately you need to extend that to all the other various sub-national bodies. I know it is a bit of a gray area but we have to be consistent with how we treat sub-national regions within a politically unitary state.

So if Scotland isn’t a country what is it? A shire? A county? Fk.

A province.
i understand Scotland has a separate cultural identity from England. I’m fine with that.
But politically it is not independent (yet) from the UK.
I’m using the modern accepted meaning of the word “country” as being interchangeable with “sovereign independent nation state” which conducts its own foreign policy, defence, economic policy and central banking etc. Scotland does not have that status. Calling it a country is using an older definition of the word.

Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.

Nup. I reject that. No other internal sub-division of a sovereign polity has the status of “country”. We should not adopt outliers that rely upon obsolete meanings of the word.

That’s quite a nonsensical view, really.
According to your scheme, for example, all the countries invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany in WW2 weren’t “countries under occupation by a foreign power”, they really were part of Greater Germany, because it was the German government that administered them.

Legally and constitutionally the crown of Australia is independent and separate from any other kingdom. The same person who is King of Australia is also the king of 15 or so other places, but the kingdoms are not united.
It will be interesting when the Coronation happens next year. All of the stuff pertaining to becoming the head of the church will be unconstitutional in Australia.

Vatican City is a cunning one.
Haven’t been there. One day I’ll do the femtocountry tour. Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican, Liechtenstein…
I got out my pocket Oxford and thumbed my way into the fs but to my chagrin femtocountry wasn’t there.
But that aside I’m listening to The Biography of Grace Kelly on the blind peoples wireless and I’m pretty sure PWM would not fit in in Monaco.

I went there once; there’s vast amounts of wealth and opulence in the buildings, while just outside VC’s borders there were people with nothing but a piece of cardboard living on the streets. Then the people in VC asked me for money — not for the poor, but for “general revenue.”
makes the sign of the very cross indeed

Tao te ching. Some people make good travellers because they have no fear of the tiger because in them the tiger has no place to put his claws.
