I can think of a few humans we could send to mars… I’ll even buy the ticket.

Harsh. I’m thinking Nauru would be fair enough.

send them to the Moon instead. just as harsh and probably not so problematic if they take Earth bugs with them.

Nice Heinlein quote :)
all right, so we got baited into reading a little
To borrow a quote from John Young, keeping such a program funded through fifteen consecutive Congresses would require a series “of continuous miracles, interspersed with acts of God”.
but that’s exactly why humans* should go to Mars, because it is the Will Of God, and it will show the rest of the losers on Earth who’s boss

OK, this article did something that articles rarely do; it changed my mind.

Yeah, it’s well argued but realistically, whether they send people to Mars or not is none of my business. It’s not my money and whatever opinion I hold I about the matter makes not one atom of difference.
So from my point of view, if they do send people to Mars in my lifetime, it’ll hopefully be an interesting and enjoyable adventure to follow on my screen.
But probably not as interesting as spending that money on big robot missions to Titan and other interesting places.

???
You now think that Musk is a damn good bloke, and humans should go to Mars as soon as possible?

Yes. And I’ll go with them.
A plan for going to Mars only made sense at the height of the cold war. When global annihilation looked to be just a few minutes away.

Depends on how soon WWIII is. And how viscous it is.
In a world where hydrogen bombs are considered conventional weapons, I shudder to think what the unconventional weapons will be like.
I’m fond of sub-Antarctic islands myself.
