Subject: Homeless women over 65 - fastest growing population in Australia

I did a day for Homeless Connect and the first 5-6 women how came with their disconnected mobiles with pictures of their grandchildren. After a couple of hundred homeless aged women I was pretty numb.

Older women are the fastest growing group to experience homelessness in Australia. On any given night, around 18,600 people aged 55 and above are homeless. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people make up eight percent of older people experiencing homelessness.

There’s been periodic mentions of this on the ABC over the years.

In general women don’t have the savings, money they might have earnt night have been swallowed up by raising kids, looking after sick parents. Without some long term strategy I think anyone could fall prey to homelessness. Drugs, simply losing your job, chronic unemployment could be other factors. There’s a older lady at work that will be losing her job soon, she has a mortgage ! She told me that the next job offered was part time and it was easier just going back on the dole. Why they are sacking her considering she was the only one that applied for the job last year is beyond me.

The two people killed worked at the site, and police understand the offender, who had a history of family violence and no gun licence, had also previously worked there.

Just for the record, I did not post into this thread. SCIENCE transferred my post from chat that had been posted for amusement only.

Yeah there should be a way for people to say things that means they can only be quoted in the ways they choose for themselves.

How about we go back to talking about the topic of the thread?

What can we do about it?

How come the people on the lefty side of politics aren’t doing more about this?

But I’ll use this as an opportunity to discuss the housing shortage, because the Greens member for Griffith is not in favour of the ALP’s development plans and he has specific criticisms that may be reasonable.

Brisbane is ridiculously sprawling and all that extra sprawl eats up the wilderness and kills wildlife and leads to more pollution and climate change etc and the solution is for each of the urban divisions to add about 2000 homes, so I do need to see the Greens’ alternative plans for adding 2000 homes to Griffith.

BTW I’m not sure how a footballer became one of my favourite urbanists but here we are.

I posted it in Chat and SCIENCE copied from there and posted it again into this thread. For what reason I do not know, but from experience it will not be to my benefit.

That had statistics on this a while ago.

Retire but with a mortage perhaps due to divorce and can’t afford to keep up the payments.
Have a lot less super and savings which you really don’t want to spend on a mortgage when you are retired.

The Wookiemeister solution

Outlaw divorce. It makes people more careful when they marry, it obliterates the divorce industry – no more money down the drain. It makes the men more responsible – you can’t just walk away from the marriage.
If the marriage is longer than say 5 YEARS no divorce. 5 years or less it’s a penalty free marriage no divorce court required, you fill out a form at the post office , signed by a JP and the marriage is over. If there are children MUST be in full time employment, having a succession of children by different men means lowered benefits, the more children the less benefits. If the woman has worked less than ten years – no benefits.

Domestic violence

Domestic violence is solved by introducing “the gauntlet” , serving some time for beating up your missus doesn’t cut it. You get a choice
1 you serve 5 years mandatory, no parole jail.

2 you endure “the gaunlet” https://youtu.be/Slkn1GhonV8

Its cheaper, no need to keep them in jail, any new woman will see the whip marks and realise they’ve gone through the gauntlet.

You need to make people responsible for their actions

All divorcees should be given a Lancaster bomber to convert into a tiny-house. So long as they paint the roof white.

You don’t tolerate DV ( not our DV) they get the stick or do the time.

You increase superannuation contributions or encourage people to increase contributions ( this will.help control inflation)

Start building simple accommodation for older women, pregnant women and put them in a big private estate, you don’t have thugs and sex offenders walking in.

You don’t use gas, this leads to fires and explosions. Smoke detectors are mandatory
Smoking and alcohol are banned
A counsel of men decide any internal disputes.

You create a common eating area
The women work in the kitchen providing the meals themselves – no private contractors

Child care is taken care by the women themselves, no businesses. Training in child care could also lead to real world work ( though no doubt they could always be taught to be primary school teachers I suppose)
