The russians repurpose an ICBM to deliver a blow to planet killing asteroids ( you’d assume that includes comets).

The tsar bomb

After the successful test of the RDS-37, KB-11 employees (Sakharov, Zeldovich, and Dovidenko) performed a preliminary calculation and, on February 2, 1956, they handed over to N. I. Pavlov, a note with the parameters for charges of 150 Mt (628 PJ) and the possibility of increasing the power to 1 gigaton of TNT (4 EJ).

Interestingly I’ve seen it quoted that you’d need 200 of these ( the tsar bomb) bombs to pulverise a 20km wide asteroid.

If we assume that we might face a shower of smaller but still deadly asteroids – presumably the russians might have already worked out how to track and destroy multiple targets simultaneously

Forget about pulverising asteroids. Bad idea.

They need nudging when they are a long way away.

nudging as in pushing them away using a shaped blast or an attached rocket.

The further away, the less nudging is required.
