There’s a ‘Lost City’ Deep in The Ocean, And It’s Unlike Anything We’ve Ever Seen

Close to the summit of an underwater mountain west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a jagged landscape of towers rises from the gloom.

Their creamy carbonate walls and columns appear ghostly blue in the light of a remotely operated vehicle sent to explore.

Tell the Chinese that it’s ‘an aphrodisiac’, or that it’s ‘exclusive, expensive culinary item’, or that eating it will ‘let you stay underwater indefinitely’, and it’ll be gone in five years.

Tell then that it does all three: eighteen months.

Be good if they included a diver for scale

The remote underwater vehicles pictured, are about the same size as a diver.

Yes.

This is an area of contention that’s been brewing for at least 40 years.

Interesting that the article mentions Howard Hughes’ ‘Glomar Explorer’.

I was having some beers with my erstwhile neighbour one day. He was a former American, naturalised Australian.

I knew he’d been an electronics tech in the US Navy in Vietnam War times (in Vietnam, doing things with electronic warfare), and talk somehow moved into where we’d been in the 1970s.

When he mentioned that he’d been aboard Glomar Explorer, i tried to be quite offhand about it. I knew that the ship had been built with one purpose in mind, and one purpose only.

The mention instantly tied together some loose ends about him.

Ah, Jim; you were a spook, weren’t you?

Have I heard about this or not?

There was a TV program about two years ago about sending a ship out near Iceland to look for undersea hydrothermal vents. The first one was called “lost city” but they’d visited it before. Then they went on to discover a new one.

Please excuse me, I tend to get my undersea hydrothermal vent fields mixed up.

Talking about spooks! Someone put in the URLS for three documentaries on spies and I really enjoyed them. It was fascinating, and they talked about two personalities or two people in some of the spies, which I found quite intriguing!
