Heard on the radio gardening show this morning………

Chives is a great natural spray for powdery mildew on cucumber, zucchini and pumpkin leaves.

Get a pile and infuse in about a ltr of boiling water, when cool remove the chives and spray onto leaves. Nothing said about watering it down.

Only one problem.

I never have enough chives to use them for that. Did they mention garlic chives? Got plenty of that

Garlic spray is one of the oldest remedies

The garlic spray used for insects is a different formulation. You suggested chive tea.. garlic tea would be no different.

Also milk is probably cheaper and more available than chives

Sulphur is a fungicide and insecticide.. garlic and all alliums contain sulphur.

Mil has also been proven an effectivecontrol of powdery and downy mildew on melons and other cucurbits. I’ve used it on beans.

Mil? Mother-in-law? Do you blend her up or just squeeze the sweat from her brow?

Forgot to say RB – thanks for the recommendation of milk spray for my bean leaves – worked wonders. Even though I have now realised they are pumpkin plants, not bean plants!! :D

I haven mentioned I’m new to this, right? :D

I thought they were beans because they came up in the spot where I grew beans last time – and I’ve never grown pumpkin. I figure I must have bokashi’ed pumpkin seeds at some point, and then they’ve survived their time in the tumbler, and somehow come up even though a good 30cm or so of straw, manure etc went into the bed on top of the compost =/

I had a chat to Sophie Thompson yesterday about this and she didn’t agree and said milk is more affective and the chives would be better used on aphids.

I asked he opinion on what I had heard that morning.

Don’t know who Sophie Thompson is, bet she doesn’t know me from a bar of soap either. Milk it is though.

Though garlic spray is a good all rounder. It is proven that milk is very effective on powdery and downy milldew. Also on aphids, scale, red spider and red legged earth mite.

Aww, I really like Tino. I think it’s important to have some younger people on the show, not just the .. umm.. slightly older presenters :D

Tino is fine and I’ve even warmed to Josh.. but not impressed with Stephen greatly.

OK I’ve worked out who Sophie is now.

One the old GA forum we had a member from Texas who told us corn meal was used a lot there.
