An Australian commedian I admire said something that I find confronting. She said “there’s no such thing as a sex addict. There are only people who try to use the words sex addict to excuse bad behaviour “.
This is confronting because I can think of three celebraties that I would class as sex addicts.
So. Is there such a thing as a genuine sex addict?
How common is it?
If so, it would come under the class of obsessive – compulsive behaviour, wouldn’t it.
That would make it quite rare, unless it was the most common form of obsessive – compulsive.
Addiction is a word that is used to describe persistent and compulsive behaviours that (most often) occur as a result of an individual chasing some sort of psychological or phycological “high”. Sex is an intense thing that stimulates deep emotional and physical responses and I’m in no way surprised by the idea that people could become addicted to the way they feel while having, or chasing after it.
I ‘think’ what is bang referred to in the comedian’s statement is a sentiment that “addiction is just a word that is now used as proxy to justify hurtful or self-destructive behaviours that people should otherwise be able to control”; which I’m not sure is overly helpful in any meaningful way.
