Rowan Atkinson on free speech

The forerunner of the Defend Free Speech campaign was called “Reform Section 5”. This speech by Rowan Atkinson at the launch event in Parliament in 2012 should be heard by every politician, journalist and campaigner before they start calling for laws to silence those they regard as ‘extremists’.

the road to free speech is more free speech and proper dialogue rather then censoring what you don’t like.

It must never be ignored that free speech is not free of consequences.

of course, but being arrested for calling a police horse gay is a tad extreme. IMO.

I totally agree.
Like a few years ago in this part of the world, a chap was also arrested for standing next to an LNP member whilst wearing a t-shirt that stated, I’m with stupid.

Certainly there are many examples of unreasonable restriction, but the question of exactly where our right to restricted speech should stop is a difficult one.

I doubt that arguing that speech should be entirely free is very helpful.

I’m happy for infants to have free speech.

Up to age 2 anyway.

Absolutely.

Except for those actions that are forbidden of course.

It’s important to distinguish between people airing unpopular views and people deliberately spreading lies and disinformation.

For example, there are countries whose governments tightly control all media and use it to spread misleading propaganda while suppressing free speech and truthful news etc.

I have nothing at all against those propaganda outlets being blocked or banned from spreading their rubbish beyond their own borders.

…Also, as I think I’ve pointed out before, Atkinson’s argument against people saying “I am only intolerant of intolerance” makes no sense, since he’s clearly intolerant of that view because he regards it as intolerant.

we mean if speech has consequences and consequential actions are limited (by more than consequences, for example by legal penalty) to mitigate some of their consequences then clearly it follows that everyone should just convert other actions to speech to get away with whatever they want

I was quite offended by that speech.
And I’ll tell you what if I had a Twitter account or a Facebook account I’d be straight there and be telling all my followers just how just outraged I felt and post a list of help lines for those who felt the same.
PeterT Ministries Help Line for example.
It’s not right.
