My nephew’s snaps from his latest wilderness walk are so spectacular it’s worth starting a thread.

Lake Spicer to the Lyell Highway via the Eldons, Western Tasmania, a two-week walk just after Christmas. He didn’t see another human being for the entire trek.

More here, including a blow-by-blow account of the walk. The full size photos are well worth a look and give a much better impression than these reduced ones

I was thinking the other day about wilderness and if anything human made would be found out in remote places like that.

I’m sure there is some untouched wilderness out there but much of it has been walked upon. Lots of gold and other mineral searches. there are the remains of quite large towns hidden in the western rainforest.

Aye, pandani. Giant grass tree. Can reach 12 metres in height.

i’ve watched a lot of Rob Parson’s vids. he purposefully goes looking for places where he knows that there were humans a hundred or more years ago and they seem hard to find. He usually finds some bottles. sometimes some leather that may have been a boot. finding a grave was/is hard even with good descriptions.

There has to be small piles of faeces out there somewhere.

It goes to show how ridiculous it was to form a moving line across Tasmania by the settlers to capture the Aboriginals, obviously doomed to fail.

Was you nephew following a track, or largely bush-bashing?

There are no tracks on that particular walk, you find your own way. He’s had enough experience to feel confident in such circumstances.

Agree.

In order to get those photos of Cradle Mountain he must have passed some human beings. Tracks around there are heavily trafficked by bush walkers.

We are still worried about forestry but to the same extent. We are still worried about mining in the Tarkine. And we are worried about the privatisation of certain reserved state assets for exclusive tourism. We aren’t worried about a theme park on Mt Wellington/kunanyi this week.

No.

I could probably make it to Hobart on the day you’re there, and meet up somewhere, rather than you make a major detour across the island :)

I do get to Hobart now and then.

So im going to tassy in july for about 12 days.

anyone down there wanna have a beer or something if we can match up dates and stuff?

I’m always keen to meet a fellow forumer.. I’m in the North West, Somerset which is on the way to Waratah. Could have a mini pud in Burnie? Waratah is less than an hours drive and I’ve never been to the pub there

:)

>I’ll ask the nephew if he found any human artefact on his walk.

He found:

a) A few footprints in dried mud, leading nowhere.
b) A rusty old fork.

…that was it.

I’ve watched a couple of rob parsons out gold sniping in the south west last night. Hard country. In one it was horizontal and in the other it was cutting grass.

At one point they couldn’t find any tracks. But GPS and drones do make this shit easier than in years gone by.

My nephew popped back to Tasmania for a five day trek last week through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, looking for the Truchanas Huon Pine Reserve.

This time he went with a friend ‘cos it’s quite an arduous safari involving a lot of lake and river paddling and finding your own way through dense forest.

He hasn’t put his photos online yet but here’s a few preview snaps.
