Alright a little info about this bug.
I can be found on Veg’s Family Fig tree. There is no Leaves on it at all, Should be loaded I would have thought. We just drop off the tree (bugs that is) when someone touches the branches.

What am I and how can Veg and his dad get rid of me.

can you put a link up to a bigger image Veg?

The antennae don’t look long enough, but it could be a longicorn beetle

if you can, a close up would be nice, use the macro setting on your camera.

okay veg, on your Control Button, the round jobby that you press with your right thumb, you should see a little flower at the 9 O’clock setting. If you hit the little flower setting once you will get to Auto-Macro, the camera will decide whether to macro or not, but if you hit the flower setting twice you will set the Macro to On, and your camera will focus on up close thingos. It may take one or two attempts to focus on the bug, but you’ll get the hang of it. Put the bug on something plain, like material or paper, not the milk carton because the camera is lazy and will want to focus on the text instead.

thanks Roughy. By the way Veg, I have saved a copy of your user manual on my file so if you need to know what any of your other buttons do, just ask, and I’ll take a look for you.

I’d leave that smile setting turned off, the bug won’t grin for you.

I did check out that site earlier today before I posted the thread and I didn’t think any of the moths there looked anything like this one, but on having another lookk to night I’d say that Opodiphthera loranthi is the most likely candidate

there are probably regional variations as well. If you click on that one you will find there are 4 different photos that are variations.

They are sawfly larva Veg. They wreck my fig tree too. Have had them on my Callistemons as well this year. They don’t seem to interfer with the fruit of the fig but they are ugly things for sure. I haven’t sprayed them but I’m always going to .

It’s not vital to spray if you’d prefer not to. My guess is that if you do spray it should reduce next years numbers though. Good old Dipel would probably do it and it’s organic.

Once you’ve got all the fruit you want then you can prune. My book says to prune in winter to force new growth.

Don’t the leaves just drop anyway? I once spent an eon figuring out how to stop grubs from eating the leaves off my white cedar. Finally worked it out. Then the leaves dropped off at end of season. I don’t bother anymore.

Yeah OK. Well my fruit finished then it dumped its leaves immediately. No idea if that’s normal.
As far as my tree is concerned, it’s heading into Autumn. Seems fair!

Hmmm, entirely different climate – cooler here – but my fig tree is still heavily laden with hundreds of fruit and still in full leaf.
