Seen in a factoid. Is this true?

“The average life span of a pet cat has risen from seven years in the early 1980s to fifteen years as of 2021.”

One person suggests that this may be due to improvements in the quality of cat food. That’s not the only hypothesis floating around.

Is this a kept at home cat or one allowed to wander. Hugh Worth used to say something along the lines of wandering cats can expect 3-4 years, protected cats can do 15. Or something. The difference was huge.

Many people keep their cats indoors now, take greater care of their medical needs, and generally have closer bonds to the creatures. There are many feral cats – not neutered or vaccinated. This area has many TNR cats and community cats that live a feral life, but have a local caregiver. They can still hunt vulnerable birds, mammals and reptiles, but can’t reproduce.

My last critter is the 15 year old Sally Cat. Her sister from the same litter died just over a year ago.

Sally a few years ago, when her name was Sao The Vegemite Cat

The Vegemite Cat

“The vegemite cat” I love it.

Ages of our cats at death from 1980s to today:
Teffy – 3 to 4 weeks
Snooky – 20 years – died 10 years ago.
Luke – 2 years (paralysis from suspected brain tumour)
Billy the Kit – 8 years and still going.

Don’t yet see a reference to a scientific study on this:

This looked promising, but isn’t it. It basically concludes that there’s no easy way to determine the age of fully adult cats in a catch-neuter-release setting.

Chilly Milly aka Eartha Kitt aka “HER/SHE!” was the only one that died of cancer @ 13
I attribute that to the fact that she slept every night on a heating pad (electromagnetic fields (EMFs)?)

Redd & “HER

Hector died of chocking on vomit at about 16
His sister Belladonna lived to 20
“The Boys” Fritz D.Katt, Merlyn and Redd all lived to be 20

Would anyone care to venture a guess as to Which Is Which?

anyway
YES Life expectancy has been extended by several factors:
Improved Diet, Early Neutering, & Being Restricted In Doors

Silly Bastid playing word games >:-p

No, they moved freely about the house ALL The Damned Time (Day & Nite)
I even rigged up a counter weight system on the bedroom door so they
could easily open it by themselves and it would slowly close behind them.

…and despite their murderous reputation
our family had all manner of animals running (and flying)
through the house unrestricted and they all respected each others’ space

the only thing in a cage was my boa constrictor because we were afraid of it hiding in the stove.
