Well what a mess my brother’s shop was in when I arrived and he was so disheartened. Boy did the shop pong from the aquarium water saturating the carpet!!

He still doesn’t know exactly what happened, but I think his suspicions are pretty close to the mark. His shop is in an old 2-storey building and on the floor above there is a martial arts school and gym. Whenever they get jumping around you can feel the vibrations in my bro’s shop and see some of the stock shaking, but of course the real estate agent is conveniently never around at the right time to see it happen :(
He thinks that caused the stand to collapse.

My SIL helped him clean up and remove the tanks and the stand and #1 daughter and I basically just kept an eye on the shop to allow him to have a free go at it. I also started doing an inventory of the damaged stock for his insurance.

As you can imagine this couldn’t have come at a worse time for him. Being a pet and hobby store his busiest period is Christmas, so he has been getting extra stock in etc. I don’t think he’ll be able to salvage the carpet but at this time of year he can’t afford to close the shop to be able to get it replaced. So his customers are going to have to deal with that horrible fishy smell and that might turn them away. All in all, not good :(

It sounds as though he will need a strong deodoriser either for the fishy smell or the musty smell from the wet carpet. Hopefully the insurers will pay up quickly so he doesn’t miss too much xmas trade.

I certainly hope so

maybe he could have a sale, and word it so it becomes a feature, like, “Smell something fishy? Water damage sale!”

He has borrowed one of those H20 steam mops and has been having a go with it. It does seem to be helping.

he may have to get a professional in if it doesn’t work. Someone who specialises in flood damage as they will have the big dryers as well to dry the carpet out.

He has been trying to organise one, but no-one locally can do it…the insurance company has told to get a licensed carpet layer/company to come and assess the damage to see if it is better to just replace the carpet or try to clean it. Waiting to hear what comes of that

Would it be better just to pull up the carpet and have bare concrete?

That is one option he is considering…but in winter the shop would be freezing….it’s not air conditioned

he wouldn’t be able to pull it up until the insurance has OK’d it.
