Can you host a small website from home and not pay any fees?

I currently have a domain with an email address hosted by another company, and I am about to register a second domain, this time with a couple of emails and a small website.

I figure I have 3 options:

1) Pay someone else to host it all.

2) Rent a server somewhere and host it myself offsite(Can I even do that?)

3) Set up a small system from home and host it here.

My connection is usually 35Mb/s down, 8Mb/s up and 22 ping.

What would be the approximate costs, maintenance, and security implications of all 3 options?

Is there another option that I’m missing?

After watching Ian’s topic on AGI yesterday, maybe you could ask a chatbot.

1 is the easiest, 2 would be cheaper and some work/effort and 3 is a lot of work.

Thanks Poik, I’ll have a read of that.

I don’t think there’s any way to get it completely for free. There’s at least a registration fee.

Eagerly awaiting an answer to Kingy’s question.

In my life I’ve had three free websites. The first was great, great editing software and everything, but after only 6 months it became a paid website only.

The second was OK. But no editing software so it became essentially just a file repository. That lasted for in excess of four years before the message on email – “your password is no longer acceptable – tough luck” and since than I haven’t been able to edit it or add anything to it. But the files are still accessible, and can be found through Google if you know exactly what to search for.

The third I gave up on immediately. The only website format available was way too restrictive – I couldn’t move the position, size, font or colour of title or change the layout into something I wanted (such as a layout without text overlapping text). So I gave up on that immediately.

I no longer have a website, and what I’m looking for is a low cost (not free) hosting website with good editing software that isn’t impossibly restrictive in its layout.

My brother in law hosts his own website locally, but I won’t do that because I want to shut off my computer occasionally.

1) Yes. This is the usual choice.

2) Yes, if you have the technical expertise then this is a good choice.

3) No. Don’t even bother trying.
