Paper wasp of some sort?

Quite a few of these flying about my backyard. They look to be maybe chewing on the wood here. Cant see an obvious nest anywhere.

Should I be worried?

If their yellow stripes have two blaxk dots on each, then yes as this is a European wasp but otherwise I wouldn’t worry. Which part of the country fo you live in?

Me too.

Thanks guys, think it’s a paper wasp. Has yellow antenna things. The euro wasp has black ones from what I can see.

Looks like pretty much all of the research grade observations on iNaturalist have dark antennae.

I think ruby knows stuff.

:)

It’s gently raining here. I’ve cleared downpipes earlier this morning. I’ve done some ironing. I think I’ll embroider for a bit and then take a nap. Because I can.

I’m not so sure, this site has both European paper wasp and the Asian paper wasp, and they look very very similar-
https://ewasp.com.au/insects-and-arachnids/wasps/
But the recommendation for both is also similar. Nuke them!!

Trev’s wasp has the distinctive yellow dots which the Asian wasp has, but the Euro doesn’t.

well if I can find them i will but they dont look to be heading to or coming from any particular direction. They are flying around some wooden lattice and landing there every now and then. They almost to me look like they are even possibly mating but they could just be cuddling I have no idea.

Maybe they are looking for a new place to live. Wife says she saw them in the same spot a few weeks ago.

Well, just to confuse things, there is a European wasp and a European paper wasp.
And now I know much more about wasps than I did this morning.

Put a dob of white paint on one and follow it home.

PMSL. The yellow antennas are yellow with pollen.

Looks like a European wasp to me. We used to feed European wasps here, but I haven’t seen any around for about five years. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen any mud wasps or paper wasps around here recently either.

Thanks a million for that wasp ID guide, roughbarked.
