Australian Transport Safety Bureau finds Boeing 737 crashed into ridge while fighting fire.
Rather ironic though, hey what but, that a plane full of fire retardant, burnt to smithereenies.

Better put this bit in, hey what but.

They were lucky that probably with a bit of skill and a lot of luck they actually made a landing they could walk away from.

It’d just dumped all the fire retardant and still had a heap of Jet A1 in the wings.
From the link – “Flight recorder data shows the throttles were advanced and the engines had accelerated just before the aircraft struck a ridge line with the stick shaker activating,” ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said.
“The aircraft then cleared a small line of foliage, before impacting the ground a second time and sliding to rest.”
Jet engines, especially airliner engines, are typically quite slow to accelerate from low power. It can take up to 9 seconds or so to go from idle to full power on some of them.
That slow acceleration is another reason why large & draggy flap settings are used for landing. Yes, it does help create a lot more lift and so reduce the landing speed but also to combat that drag a lot more engine power is needed, and so the engines are running well above idle and so can accelerate to full power much earlier.
Anyway they got caught out by that unfortunately.

The Navy taught us to avoid the yellow features (dry land) on the navigational charts.
The RAAFies are taught to avoid the tall bits.
