It’s apparently supposed to be possible to run a PC monitor via HDMI cable (if not, why do they bother with such ports on PCs and monitors?)
However, my monitor won’t work with the new PC via HDMI cable despite both monitor and PC having the required ports.
Are there magic words you have to chant or suchlike?

Maybe one of these would work (below). The new PC has a DVI-D output but my bigger monitor has no DVI-D input. It does have two HDMI sockets.
The monitor has a D-SUB port but there isn’t one on the PC and the motherboard pamphlet says: The DVI-D port does not support D-SUB connection by adpater.

The little 19” spare monitor is even older and that does have a DVI-D port (but I don’t have a DVI-D cable). As with the larger monitor, I’ve always connected it via D-SUB.
This new PC is the first one I’ve owned that doesn’t have a D-SUB port.

I have plugged the 27” back into the old computer. But since I currently have no monitor that can work with the new PC, I’m unable to adjust any settings in the new PC.

Make sure you are plugging in to the graphics card HDMI port rather than the Motherboard HDMI port.
Ha, didn’t think of that. I was plugging it into the motherboard but having a look, the graphics card has its own HDMI port(s).
I’ll try again later this afternoon.
An option might be to connect both the old and new computers to your local network, then use Remote Desktop on your old one to view the desktop on the new one.

Well it did connect to the internet, then lost connection after rebooting. Don’t know what the problem is.

if your computer is doing updates you might want give it a followup manual reboot, after it’s had plenty time to do whatever, that might recover your internet, worth a try to exclude the whatever, there’s a lot of whatevers to do with matters computer
I mention it because couple time this new laptop has seemed to install the updates, and some mysterious business of no wifi seemed to occur, no internet, not sure how it went, but an idiot should always try a reboot
I do a reboot when I sleep each day, seems to work
How does Edge stop you downloading chrome?
I just did a search for Chrome using Bing and Edge, and it took me straight to the Chrome download site. There were a few messages saying don’t bother with Chrome mate, Edge is much better, but they were easily ignored.

most i’ve seen is Bing search whatever, via Edge questioning the necessity of another browser

There are probably things you haven’t turned on or off.
Spent about an hour on the phone with the ISP tech help, but they weren’t able to help.
Seems I’ve done what should be done to establish the WiFi connection, but it remains extremely unstable.
Very slow when it is connected and keeps falling out after half a minute or so. Sometimes it can reconnect, sometimes can’t.
All he could suggest is that I take the computer into the living room to connect via ethernet, long enough for the computer to do all its updates, and then its behaviour might improve.

I couldn’t see anywhere to attach them but I’ve found the screw things now.
Rebooting and see if it makes a difference.

Might be worth mentioning to the whole forum, the first problem with the HDMI cables – I’m not expert but I believe it’s a known thing among experts that there are masses of people out there who payed big bucks for a fancy graphics card and then do not utilize those graphics cards at all, for the entire life of the computer, because they plugged their monitor in to the motherboard rather than the graphics card, and so are running off the CPU built in graphics rather than those produced by the expensive card. Some manufacturers disable the relevant motherboard outputs to stop this from happening, which I guess is the case with Bubblecar’s computer.
If you are reading this, and this is new information to you, and you are the one who plugged your monitor in to your computer and at that time you did not know about the whole motherboard v graphics card stuff, it might be worth checking now that your monitor is properly connected.dv said:
