I think roses will tolerate a wide range of soils. The best and cheapest time to plant them is mid winter when they are dormant and you can buy them bare rooted, but you can still plant out potted ones in other times although I wouldn’t recommend on very hot days.
Renae doesn’t have a noticable scent. It’s a thornless climber.

Any good ones that Dont smell to Much (two blokes who cant stand strong Perfume).
Thee’s forum has a lot of rose growers.
This is what my Plan is, Get 10 and plant them at every post and then one in between, going two colours, so the Post ones will be the same colour.
Something that Doesn’t have to many thorns, doesn’t to smell much.

Another Idea I just thought of I could Plant one at each post (6 post), and then I’d have about 2m’s where I could Plant some say lettuce, or Broccoli.

Why not plant climbing roses and train them along the fence?
Once when I was a young fella, I thought that I did not like the smell of roses. Then I worked and worked and worked with them day in and day out. I soon grew to love the smell of a rose.
Perhaps Veg you have not yet learned to appreciate the smell of a rose?
White Icebergs are always a great easy care rose Veg and also a red rose call Irene is a vigorous grower and NO smell and they would look great together, cheapest way is to buy bare rooted in May / June and plant in the winter is good also :)

How are we gonna make a gardener out of you if you have dodgy knees and get a headache at the smell of a rose? Me thinks you might be best suited to working inside… say a bank?
