In my new backyard was a big 2.4 × 2.4m sandpit. I offered the sand up on freecycle and it went yesterday and made a 3yr old boy very happy. It’s new life will be as my first vege patch.

empty of sand, the compost bays ready, with some straw and lucerne on the bottom.

I am going to have to get some parsley going in a pot I think. I bought some today at the stupidmarket, poor wilted specimen that it was, for some potato salad I am going to make. Thought I would contribute something the the CFA BBQ next door tonight seeing as they were so kind enough to invite me.

I think most people are nice given the chance.

If I try to be country-style nice on the rare occasion I’m in a city I find that most of the time nice begets nice, smiling begets smiling, and good manners beget polite responses.

I know some un-nice, rude and toffee-nosed people up the country, especially the “our family’s been here for generations and who do you think you are?” types.

Perhaps city people get paranoid and learn not to trust (for good reason?) and it becomes a habit?

went for a bit of a drive to Mansfield this afternoon, just to check it out. On the way I stopped off at Lake Nillacootie to check out the spillover. The lake was pretty muddy from the rain.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Mansfield is bigger than Swanpool but smaller than Benalla. It is a base for many of the High Country activities you can do. There was a nice nursery there, and their hardware store was bigger too. I bought a rail and hooks to hang some cooking utensils off. There was a bit of wall just begging for it.

yes. it was in a too sunny spot at the old place and hasn’t been repotted for a long time. I need to repot and feed it I think, but where it is now is shady all day so I hope that it will green up some more once I have done that.

I was doing the washing up and a little Welcome Swallow was trying to get in through the kitchen window. Confused by the light no doubt. I soooooo felt like opening the window and letting it in but I think that would have confused and frightened it even more! Turned the light out now so hopefully it will get reorientated and find home. There is a family of them that I see in the dusk catching insects so it could be one of the young ones.

Given enough light, Wax Plant will produce parachute clusters of sweet-scented, star-shaped, white to pink flowers with five-point centers. This plant blooms best when slightly pot -bound, so move it to a slightly larger pot only every couple years or when needed. Do not move the plant when buds are forming, because this may cause them to drop.

Don’t prune off the leafless stem — or spur — where flowers have been produced because flowers will form on the same spurs year after year.

To show off its thickly-leafed vines, and to give them a denser appearance, loop them around a wire hoop or trellis and tie loosely with florists wire.

This is a long-lived plant and easy to grow with little attention.

————————————————————————————————————————

Origin: India and East Asia

Height: Trailing stems can grow to 10 ft (3 m)

Light: Bright light with some direct sun. Hoyas will live in low light, but will not bloom.

Water: Keep soil evenly moist spring through fall. In winter, water sparingly giving the plant just enough to keep the soil from drying out completely.

Humidity: Average room humidity.

Temperature: Average room temperatures 60-75°F, 16-24°C

Soil: Peat moss based potting mix.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly spring through fall with high-potassium liquid fertilizer diluted by half.

Propagation: Take 3 in (7 cm) stem tip cuttings in spring. Cuttings should include at least 1 pair of leaves. They will root easily in moist potting mix.

Thanks for that HP. More info for the Guru.

yes. it was in a too sunny spot at the old place and hasn’t been repotted for a long time. I need to repot and feed it I think, but where it is now is shady all day so I hope that it will green up some more once I have done that.

Mine is, and always has been, in full shade.

I have never had any luck with them once I have re-potted. And I have always been warned by wiser men than I not to repot… ever.

But I have seen them growing wild in the jungles on PNG. :)

Mine was literally ripped out of the ground before we sold Mum’s house, potted and repotted. It’s a toughy.

maybe just a good feed then? must admit, it is happily sending out new shoots atm.

In PNG, they grow like orchids or epiphytes, just in the nook of tree branches with little soil, but plenty of moisture…

Good stuff here eh? Nice one Potter!

Your gardening hasn’t gone backwards since you moved BG.

I think this is despite me! lol!

I’ve got 2 bits of Thee’s crucifix orchid that I am assured will survive the trip home … despite me, too!
