Subject: Galvorn is it a kind of mithril?

Yes, I know everyone has either read the Tolkein books or watched the movies.

Mithril and galvorn both are mentioned there.

“Today, we introduce a new brand name for DexMat’s aligned carbon nanotube fibers, yarns, and films: Galvorn.”

What I want to know is how long the individual nanotube fibres are. For a long time they were only about a mm long, which made them exceptionally difficult to weave into cloth.

Then nanotube fibres a cm long were announced, which were still difficult to weave into a cloth.

Since then nanotube fibres a dm long were announced, easy to weave or knit into cloth. But I haven’t any more about that. And a nanotube researcher I asked said that the longer fibres were very inferior in quality.

A problem with short fibres is that the slip over one another extremely easily, reducing the yarn strength by a factor of about 1000. Chemical treatment (deliberately introducing flaws into the fines so they bond witheach other better) is only partly successful.

So I’d be interested in knowing if they’ve overcome these very real limitations of nanotubes yet.
