Evening all :)

Recently I took the kids to Fort Nepean on the south tip of Victoria which holds two cannons that were the first Australian shots in WW1 and WW2. I’m curious if anyone would know if there’s any other places like this in Vic to check out, or anywhere else of interest that isn’t the ‘usual’ stuff that everyone does (zoo, aquarium, etc) .. looking for something awesome but a little different.

Not sure if HMAS Cerberus is able to be visited?

Apparently (according to the electric internet), the Museum there is able to be visited with a minimum of two days notice, presumably for security checks etc.

Do you mean the current HMAS Cerberus (training establishment, Westernport Bay, Vic), or the old warship HMVS Cerberus?

I see that you almost certainly mean the shore establishment.

Have a look here:

https://www.navy.gov.au/hmas-cerberus-heritage-and-learning-centre

and follow the leads given there.

You might also ask if you can see the chapel on the establishment grounds, and for a look at any other parts of the establishment that the manager of the heritage centre thinks are relevant to the periods you have in mind (they’d have to arrange a guide etc.)

There’s also HMAS Castlemaine at Williamstown:

https://hmascastlemaine.org.au/

One of dozens of Bathurst-class corvettes constructed during WW2, Castlemaine is one of only two still in existence, and the only one afloat.

I’ll spare you any historical details, as i’m sure the Castlemaine people will provide them all.

Thanks guys 🙂 Yeah I did mean HMAS Cerberus, I’ve heard of it but don’t know anything about it (if still in use or not). All good though, will follow those up. Cheers :)

I was reading about HMS Britomart but all I could think is that it sounds like an English convenience store.

Me, I’d like to visit Neptune.

A beautiful blue world about 4.5 billion km away, but still active enough to power winds at up to 2000 km/hr.

Not sure if HMAS Cerberus is able to be visited?

The old warship can be seen from the coast from Half Moon Bay. I did hear some news about closing down access to diving, but am not sure, you’d have to check it up.

Diving in winter, if you can time a visit with the spider crab mass migration (late May to mid June), then I’ve heard that the pier at Rye is worth a visit. https://www.visitvictoria.com/regions/mornington-peninsula/see-and-do/tours/nature-and-wildlife-tours/the-scuba-doctor-tours/guided-scuba-dives-with-giant-spider-crabs

My personal favourite for seeing wildlife is the sewage treatment plant and wildlife reserve near Werribee. You need to borrow keys from the water treatment authority or go on a guided tour. https://www.melbournewater.com.au/services/licences-and-permits/birdwatching-access

My personal favourite small zoo is the Phillip Island Wildlife Park. https://www.piwildlifepark.com.au/
While there I’ve been attacked by emus, mugged by a kangaroo, hand fed a cassowary, and had a brolga do a dance just for me. (Though not on the same day).

If in the centre of Melbourne, don’t miss Artvo in the Docklands. Do take your kids and your camera: Compact camera or SLR camera or mobile phone cameras or all three. https://www.artvo.com.au/ The blurb says “Welcome to Australia’s first immersive, ‘trick-art’ gallery! Priceless photos. Unbelievable scenarios. The first of its kind, it is a self-guided gallery suitable for all ages, groups small or large with visitors taking many photographs with family and friends, memories that will last a lifetime.”

I can recommend more, but those are my four personal ‘out of the way’ favourites.
