In regional Victoria, it’s not uncommon to lose phone reception.

Amid the chaos of school pick-up in Bridgewater in Central Victoria, this is what Claire Ryan thought was happening when her phone showed “SOS” instead of a signal on a Friday afternoon in May.

She didn’t realise it was the first sign she’d been hacked.

“We did nothing wrong. We didn’t click on a link, we didn’t give our information to anyone, we just got everything stolen from us,” she said.
“It’s like someone just walked into your house and took everything you own, like an invisible robber.” :https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-16/sos-warning-first-sign-of-identity-theft-mobile-phone-porting/102316168

One of those people who say ‘my life is on my phone’.

Never that that to be the smartest idea ever.

I have some sympathy for that these days, when some sites insist you change your password every couple of weeks or so.

Not that I store my bank passwords on the phone (or computer), but most of my other passwords are stored on one or the other.

I think it possible that the more you put online about yourself, the greater the danger that a crimiinal who already has your Medibank or Optus Telstra details, can add more to the profile they are building. ie: a lot of people use their birthdate as a password or say their address?

It’s just one reason why I never have any banking details nor app on my phone. Facepalm and Twitter apps are also never used.

Which reminds me. My internet link crashed after I’d typed in all my credit card details and before my order for Ticketek tickets went through on Friday. I’d better just check if there’s any money left in the bank.
