Subject: Erasing of traumatic memories ?

I was just reading a news story about the sexual abuse of a young girl.

She has to live with these memories and PTSD which are likely to have life long effects on her psyche, personality and her ability to interact with other humans.

If we had a way to erase the neural pathways in the brain relating to the memories so its like they never happened or the trauma they create is removed should it be done.

It would be done after the perpetrator has been punished (if possible) but does it then give them an out as it’s almost like they never did it.
Plus does it minimise what the victim went through.

Not erasing, but preventing by playing Tetris.

there is a fairly decent documentary called “tell me who I am” about a guy who lost his memories (I can’t remember how) but his brother created a childhood of him that was lovely instead of telling him that they both experienced serious adverse childhoods. it. did. not. end. well.

Yes that’s the sort of thing I was wondering would the brain fight back so to speak and make the situation worse.

People are subject to all sorts of horrible things by other humans damaging them for life, do we just live with them

probably takes constant effort to maintain an alternate reality, an uncommon effort

my latest theory is that we might need to also focus on protective factors. Rather than always trying to prevent remembering – allow it but embed protective factors such as community supports, healing processes and a system that support victims rather than forgets about them.

Memory erasure – Wikipedia Article

Memory erasure is the selective artificial removal of memories or associations from the mind. Memory erasure has been shown to be possible in some experimental conditions; some of the techniques currently being investigated are: drug-induced amnesia, selective memory suppression, destruction of neurons, interruption of memory, reconsolidation, and the disruption of specific molecular mechanisms.

There are many reasons that research is being done on the selective removal of memories. Potential patients for this research include patients with psychiatric disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder, or substance use disorder, among others.

Memory erasure is also featured in numerous works of fiction, with fictional methods and properties that do not necessarily correspond with scientific reality.

In a very real sense, anti-psychotic medicines already do erase traumatic memories. Not all memories by any means, only those memories on which the brain tends to dwell over and over.

I wouldn’t say they erase them; they moderate the response to them.

It seems much of the ill/trauma in the world could be due to bad memories, PTSD, addiction, fundamentalist indoctrination, abusive nurture, etc.
If we could erase/reset the pathways in the brain associated with them would it help these people heal.
Just thinking not much will change in the world until all the above no longer occur which is unlikely

I did pretty well
until I first met someone
who introduced me to Paul Kelly
by linking me to Too Much Water So Close To Home

back story:
I’d stumbled upon a murder scene as a 7 year old child
(witnessed several policemen pulling the bloody body of a woman
from the pond immediately adjacent to the playground of our grammar school)
I was successful in erasing it from my memory until the song/story made it come rushing back
