No doubt most members would have been pestered by the nuisance calls. I receive at regular intervals enquiries about Solar Panels amongst other calls. Each time I offer a terse response and block that number. This blocking has reduced the number of calls but some still come through. I have often wondered how the phone numbers that appear with the call can be allocated. Surely not legitimately. Do any members here have an explanation has to how this can happen. Or is my naivety to the fore here?

Then again there is the solicited, where a friend of mine sent a persson to see me about my trees, because he said he was looking for work like this. I could see from his limited equipment that he was going to scale my trees with superhuman shoes and bring them down. BUT.. there were lots of those. Particularly because he implied that because that tree was a native, that it would require council approval but the others, also native, wouldn’t.
Anyway, I still have to do something about the trees if I want superlative solar panel installation to perform well.
Even though others in the village have solar panels pointed in all sorts of aother directions than exactly at the sun.

That bastard wouldn’t stop calling me and even stood there knocing at my door until I happened to walk where I could with my lack of hearing capacity hear the noise.
Dunno why he didn’t get the message the first time.

You can just try saying nothing.
If you don’t recognise the calling number, simply stay silent.
Most of the time, if there’s no sound heard from you, the machine will hang up in about 5 seconds.
They’re set up so that if you say ‘hello’ or anything, it switches the connection to one of their staff.
No sound from you, and it hangs up, tries the next number.

As people mentioned the DNC register be aware it takes 30 days to completely update once registering , add all of your numbers otherwise, those numbers could be called and be aware this does expire and also can be overridden when opting into surveys , competitions and raffles or voucher offers where there is an opt in the T&cs , they can call , if you are not on the DNC , they can call. There is also a DNC internal register where if you request to be removed from the call list they need to action that for that company it is required to comply with the DNC rules.
There are some exceptions such as charities as they are excluded from the DNC rules unless you specifically ask to be added to their internal DNC register. Be aware getting taken off a call list is not the same as being taken off the database as that call centre may have mny clients they call on behalf of , meaning they may you from other companies they represent in the future.

Depending on my mood, and if I have time, I answer them then lead them along for a while.
I usually end by telling them I’m with the fuzz, that their number has been traced and they can expect a visit from the authorities soon.

Sometimes it was fun to get them to go off-script.
Ask them where they’re calling from, what the weather is like there, how soon until they knock off, what are their plans for the evening, what do they like to do on their days off, do they have children, what are the kids’ career plans, would they like to visit Australia, etc. etc.

No, they’d probably just hang up, and it’s about wasting their time. Do you have relatives in Australia? How did you get into this line of work? Does it pay well? Got any plans to move to other work? If you could, what would you like to do? Do you need education for that? Is it a competitive field? Where were you born? Is that a nice place? You speak English well, where did you learn? etc., etc., and (of course) etc.

I get heaps of trouble from unsolicited phone calls, sometimes three from the same number on the same day.
I can’t block a landline call – if you know how to then please let me know.
I am on the “do not call” list but not only does that not block charities, it also doesn’t block government initiatives including water-saving shower heads, LED lighting, draft stoppers for doors and vent shut-off flaps.
I gather that the people who make these calls are paid by the number of calls they make, so if they ring the same number twice then they get paid twice.
But most of all, how do you block a spam call number on a landline?

Depending on my mood, and if I have time, I answer them then lead them along for a while.
I usually end by telling them I’m with the fuzz, that their number has been traced and they can expect a visit from the authorities soon.
Yeah, I can hear them laughing at that threat.
Of course. But anything I can do to waste their time …
Trouble is, you are wasting your time on them, which is partly what they want. Particularly if they want your voice print.

My attempts at Christian conversion are by using Martin Luther King Jr’s voice.

I have on my phone an audio recording made using a text-to-speech voice named Sophie.
I got the idea from the legendary ‘numbers’ stations on short-wave radio.
With very nice English accent, Sophie says hello, a couple of random words, then reads out a long series of words and numbers e.g. Arrowhead 77349, Arrowhead 77349, Barricade 02785, Barricade 02785, Canvas 35133, Canvas 35133, etc. etc. and then she signs off.
It only takes a couple of seconds to push the button and have this nonsense played to the ‘caller’.
Leave them wondering what they’ve connected to.

Listening to the cricket on the wireless from England they often say something like “local stations will be leaving us shortly for the shipping news”

And then a long list of places you’ve never heard of with seemingly random information added.

Brian did used to read the real forecast sometimes.

It has become a stereotype that people of a certain age, who listen to Radio 4, will listen to the shipping forecast. It is perceived by many as more accurate than the more glossy television weather forecasts. Mrs. Bale fits into that stereotype and that is the joke.

Unplug it from the wall

My landline phone has the facility to block numbers, as does the modem that it is connected to…
