Space program scientists research duckweed in northern Victoria for sustaining life on Moon, Mars
Recall this stuff as a youngster on dirt bank parts of the main canal.
A woman was walking past with a toddler in hand and he escaped her hand and looked to me like he thought this plant was solid ground and wanted to run across it to what he perceived was the edge of the water. I caught the errant child and handed him back to his mother. I was only about eight myself at the time.
The mother was grateful in her thanks.

I guess the idea is you can, subsequently, feed it to ducks which humans eat.

Yeah, it is horrible stuff. Can completely cover a pod so that it looks like a putting green. Bastard stuff to scoop or net off the to of the water. Can never get all of it so it grows back within a couple of weeks. Apparently makes good compost if you can be bothered with all that work.
