Stokes doesn’t have a decent batsman left to stay with.

It’s all over. Smith caught him.
Not a big lead, but England were really throwing the bat and taking risks just to get near level terms.
Not even tea on day 2. Let’s hope the Aussies can bat methodically and tactically to get a bit of a score in the 2nd innings.

I think he is cooked. His intention to retire at the end of this year might come about earlier.

There’s no way Australia is at fault. The umpires all three had no choice but to give it out.

I read it and thought what a load of crap. Bairstow completely muffed it.
He walked away and the only thing he did was scratch his foot on the ground. He didn’t look back. He had no idea that the ball was already on its way to the stumps before he left the crease.
He hasn’t admitted it yet but he’d do the same thing in his position as wicketkeeper and The Coach Brendan McDullum did the same thing. There’s no way Australia is at fault. The umpires all three had no choice but to give it out.
Anyway, I watched them on field and though Root was pumping up the crowd and so too it seemed was Stokes but on the field it was mostly the business of cricket which does include concessiional nods and smiles to let the bowler know that ball did completely beat the batsman and stuff like that. The crowd was unruly in unision. So loud that I wasn’t getting much of the commentary so I muted the TV.
I don’t think there was really much in this;
From here
After hitting a Moeen ball straight to midwicket while on two, Smith immediately reacted when Bairstow said something to him upon being dismissed.
Stump microphones picked up Bairstow saying “See ya, Smudge”, before Smith reacted asking, “What did you say, mate?”
The third Ashes Test is currently at a fascinating juncture, with Australia ending the second day on 116-4, a lead of 142 runs. Day 3 is expected to be a fascinating one, but the weather could play spoilsport at Headingley, with rain predicted for the morning and afternoon sessions.
According to the Met Office website, the Yorkshire & Humber area will be dry and sunny initially, with clouds increasing in the morning and bringing in areas of rain towards the afternoon. The showers could be torrential and thundery.

Excellent. Shithole country deserves shit weather.
I dunno.. with this stupid pommy weather on top of all the stupid modes of play.. so called Bazball.. it’s very very hard for all decent honest hard-working Aussie punters, as well as all purulent puce-faced whinging pommy punters to know quite how to place their bets.
and tell me, is it still raining there in England?

this whole series I have felt AUS were 50-100 short of a defendable target, but they won anyway. I’m thinking 300 would be ideal here, but anything over 200 is a bonus.
Depends a bit on what thew weather decides to do tomorrow of course, whether the weather is overcast and gloomy or bright and sunny.

GRRRR…
no need to hit sixes when fours will do. Can’t be out caught if you slog it along the ground.
I hope that is enough. 5 or 6 overs left tonight – want a couple of wickets ideally.

Looking forward to tonight, Aussies are slight favourites, might roll them for around 200ish.

Good point.
not really looking very promising for Aus at the moment.
need some wickets, stat.
Stokes is out, strangled down the leg side, he feathers the ball to Carey and instantly the complexion of the match changes!
England still needs 90 runs!
Biarstow gone, six down with 90 to get.
Well that got close

It did get close and all credit to the English tail. They held their nerve and filled in for their captain.
“For three days, excited crowds have been walking down St Michael’s Lane to Headingley’s cricket ground. A good number of them have paused at the Original Oak for a nerve-settling pint ahead of the day’s play. On Sunday, the pub opened at 10am, just as the morning service began in the church opposite.
The congregation in St Michael and All Angels’ were mostly locals – but a few of the faithful were visiting fans who had stopped to say a prayer or two on the way to the ground. The vicar had prepared his sermon with cricket-lovers in mind, hiding the players’ names in his 10-minute talk. “God’s love is so Broad, the Root of our faith, it Stokes the fires …”
By mid-afternoon on Sunday, all 18,000 souls in the ground were in desperate need of fortification, be it from the Good Book or a stiff drink: only in the sporting arena do you get the chance to see so many people’s faith being simultaneously tested. “

For once, drinking to thoughts and prayers actually worked?
There are rumors flying around that Australian cricketer Alex Carey left a barber shop without paying but in Breaking News they are saying there could have been four of them.
It’s 22 years since Australia won an Ashes series in England…

In 1962–63 Sir Donald Bradman came out of retirement to play for the Prime Minister’s XI against the MCC; it was the last time he ever played cricket and he was freakishly bowled by Brian Statham for 4. When he returned to the pavilion he told Robert Menzies “It wouldn’t happen in a thousand years. Anyway that’s my final appearance at the wicket.”
