Howdee folks….thought I’d pop me head in, say Hi and hope you’re all well and enjoying your gardens

And while I’m here I’ll check if anyone has got any fab ideas for a bumper crop of garlic & cumquats.
Thinkin I might try my hand at some cumquat marmalade.
But I don’t want my garlic to go to waste, so if you have any brilliant ideas as to how to preserve or save for later use, please let me kno

g’day muschee

garlic is easy. just plant cloves in autumn and harvest about now. medium soil, winter rain but 9 months wait.

cumquats – i don’t know. this year i’m getting loquat and guava growing for the first time in my life. i am interested – frost free plants i imagine.

let the garlic dry out in a dry airy place with the leaves on until the leaves completely dry off. You can then remove them if you wish or if you plait them to dry, leave them in plaits. Do not wash your garlic bulbs but just brush off any dirt once it has dried. Keep in a dark dry place and they should be good for eating until next Autumn. Save the fattest corms to replant.

peel your garlic into cloves and place in sterilised jars, and then fill with Olyve Oyl. They can be preserved like this and you can also use the oil once you have finished the garlic.

You can also preserve them in brine, but I do not know how.

However, some people say that both of these methods are wrong and that you will poison yourself, and some will say “do not listen to the painmaster”.

So in conclusion, I have consumed garlic preserved in both oil and brine to no ill-effects and it is sold in the shops, but warnings against poisoning should not be taken lightly.

garlic grows all year really. plant some in march, some in sept and some in dec – and you will be harvesting most the time. you can harvest it early rather than waiting for it to die.

the same thing applies to leeks and onions really. altho’ some people give a planting time – it depends on your climate – and i reckon perth might be all year round alliums.

Thanks folks for the help….Love the picture of all that garlic hanging up.
I did think of another way to keep some garlic…make a big batch of garlic butter and freeze it.
