Dr Sarah McNab, the director of general medicine at the Royal Children’s hospital in Melbourne, said the rise was likely due to flu patterns returning to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic and the ease with which the contagious virus spreads in childcare centres and schools. “We now have all of the respiratory illnesses circulating in the community again,” she said. In the past month, she said the hospital had seen a rise in the numbers of children presenting with the flu. The most common symptoms include lethargy, aches and pains, fever and a runny nose.
LOL fuck “after” LOL
But the severity of flu cases for children has also spiked, with some admitted to intensive care with serious heart, brain and muscle-related complications. Prof Nicholas Wood, a University of Sydney paediatrics expert, said it was not yet clear why the severity of cases had gotten worse. The severity of infections among children prompted the NSW chief health officer, Kerry Chant, to urge parents to get their children vaccinated.
Oh hey anyone wonder what intervening phenomenon might have changed the severity of “normal” patterns before and after¿
Oh and anyone know any other way of preventing severe influenza apart from getting shot¿
Damn it, guess everyone who told ‘us it was over was lying.

there’s a notion of community in that^, what is ‘shared’, a lot of which a child couldn’t word, and perhaps much of a person couldn’t word in a lifetime, you might ask if there’s a purpose in whatever being unlikely to be worded in a lifetime, or you might not, anyway as things go culture and the state outlives you, continues the good work, regardless of what you might never know

A devastating surge of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations is now ripping through the island of Okinawa in Japan. It is the worst COVID-19 wave that the island has experienced, with hospitalization rates now at 48.39 per hospital, surpassing the previous peak reached in January 2023.

https://www.hks.harvard.edu/centers/mrcbg/programs/growthpolicy/economic-cost-long-covid-update-david-cutler
2022, Paper: “In a 2020 JAMA Viewpoint, Lawrence Summers and I guessed at the possible economic costs of long COVID.1 At the time, we thought the cost might be $2.6 trillion. With more data, that estimate can be updated. I do so here. Background Many survivors of SARS-CoV-2 infection suffer “long COVID,” formally termed PostAcute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). Data suggest that 22-38% of people with COVID will have at least one symptom 12 weeks after initial onset, and 12-17% will have three or more symptoms. With 80.5 million confirmed COVID cases in the United States, this implies at least 9.6 million people with three or more symptoms of long COVID. The most common symptom of long COVID is fatigue, but every organ system has been implicated.”

The centre, in Mt Morgan, near Rockhampton, is among dozens opting to close across the country in recent years as worker shortages cause major problems for the sector in every state and territory.
Seventy-six aged care centres have closed across the country in the past two years, according to the federal department of health and aged care. But of those, the department said 61 per cent were due to “ageing facilities or outdated stock”.
“In 2023-24, the forecast gap in the number of RNs needed has reduced from 11,700 to 8,400 and for Personal Care Workers this has reduced from 13,700 to 13,300,” a spokesperson for the department said.

Of the 1,309 people confirmed dead in their homes between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31, 743 were male, while 566 were female, according to a breakdown of the fatalities collected from municipal governments and released on Thursday. According to the ministry, 63% were in their 80s or over, while 22.6% were in their 70s, followed by those in their 60s, at 7.3%, and 50s, at 3.3%. A share of 77.5% had underlying conditions while 10.8% did not. The health conditions of the remaining 11.7% is unknown.
Alarmingly, 38.3% of them had no or only light symptoms immediately before they died, indicating that some of them saw their conditions deteriorate rather suddenly.
Japan on May 8 downgraded the classification of COVID-19 to put it on par with seasonal flu, scaling back a range of support measures and deciding to leave prevention measures largely up to individuals and businesses.

The retrospective cohort was conducted to assess the effect of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (NMV-r) on the long-term risk of neuropsychiatric sequela following COVID-19. TriNetX research network was used to identify nonhospitalized adult patients who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection or were diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022. Further propensity score matching method was used to create two matched cohorts with and without receiving NMV-r. The primary outcome was the incidence of neuropsychiatric sequela within a 90-day to 1-year period following a diagnosis of COVID-19. After screening 119 494 527 electronic health records, two matched cohorts of each 27 194 patients were identified. During the follow-up period, the NMV-r group demonstrated a reduced risk of any neuropsychiatric sequelae compared to the control group (odds ratio , 0.634; 95% confidence interval , 0.604-0.667). In comparison with the control group, the patient treated with NMV-r exhibited a markedly diminished risk of developing neurocognitive sequela (OR, 0.377; 95% CI, 0.325-0.439) and psychiatric sequela (OR, 0.629; 95% CI, 0.593-0.666). In addition, patients treated with NMV-r had a significantly reduced risk of developing dementia (OR, 0.365; 95% CI, 0.255-0.522), depression (OR, 0.555; 95% CI, 0.503-0.612), insomnia (OR, 0.582; 95% CI, 0.508-0.668) and anxiety disorder (OR, 0.645 95% CI, 0.600-0.692). Moreover, the beneficial effect of NMV-r on the neuropsychiatric sequelae was observed across further subgroup analyses. Among nonhospitalized COVID-19 patients, who at risk of disease progression, the use of NMV-r is associated with a reduction in the long-term risk of neuropsychiatric sequela, including dementia, depression, insomnia and anxiety disorder. It may be necessary to re-evaluate the use of NMV-r, as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of severe acute disease and post-acute adverse mental health outcomes.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-07-23/flu-season-hitting-children-hard-antivirals-may-help/102633722
It is at that point where health advocacy group the Immunisation Coalition says it is now “simply too late” to stop the worst of the spread. Professor Booy said vaccination was still the first line of defence, but it was now time to deploy the second line of defence; antivirals. The Immunisation Coalition receives funding from a range of sources including pharmaceutical companies that make antivirals, but maintains its advocacy is independent and evidence-based.
Professor Booy, who is an infectious diseases paediatrician, is particularly concerned about vulnerable patients including children, the elderly, those with chronic illness, Indigenous people and migrant communities. Phil Britton, an associate professor of paediatric enfectious diseases at the University of Sydney, said children’s hospitals were seeing more severe cases of influenza in kids than usual.
$$$$
In Australia three antivirals are approved for use for influenza and two are available at pharmacies. The main one is called Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir. There’s also Relenza, chemical name zanamivir, which is inhaled. A third, called peramivir, is an intravenous infusion used in hospitals.
$$$$
The key challenge with both is that neither is subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme so patients are looking at between $40 and $50 at the pharmacy counter, whereas if it was listed it would be $7.30 for concession patients or $30 for everyone else.
Hey tell all you fuckers something, you know what will actually prevent death from influenza, critical illness from influenza, severe illness from influenza, mild to moderate influenza, and even transmission of influenza¿
Hint: the following arsehole is wrong.
Dr Britton said one reason this flu season was hitting kids hard was infection control measures during the pandemic had kept children quarantined.

had a quick read of some that
is there a secondary reason for associating vapes and polonium with russia, other than an example of its poisonousness
and I should mention that’s possibly the first time i’ve written the word poisonousness, spellcheck is being unkind, like a mean grade three teacher, all of which aren’t mean, most in fact i’m sure are not, but reckon a reader might or may know what I mean to mean

Bodhi was born unresponsive at the Flinders Medical Centre and died a day after his birth in August 2021. Saridewi Djamani, 45, died on Friday after being sentenced to the death penalty in 2018 for trafficking nearly 31 grams of pure heroin, the Central Narcotics Bureau said. Her execution came two days after a Singaporean man, Mohammed Aziz Hussain, 56, died for trafficking around 50g of heroin. The sinking on Thursday brought the death toll from a week of stormy weather across Luzon, the main island of the Philippines, to at least 35. There were 34 new deaths recorded.

This contributor is probably a little more trustworthy.
https://m.startribune.com/michael-osterholm-long-covid-pandemic-booster-podcast/600292775/
This March, as many people had dispensed with nasal swabs and masks, Osterholm celebrated his 70th birthday by hosting a few (tested) guests for dinner and attending a small, uncrowded music show (wearing an N-95 mask). And yet, he got his first SARS CoV-2 infection.
I was one of three people who all got infected the same night. We don’t know exactly where we got it. I think the only time all three of us didn’t have a fitted N-95 mask on was just a short elevator ride in my building.
By week three and four, the fatigue really set in worse than during the illness itself. And I started having memory loss. If you’d asked me, What’s a Champagne and orange juice drink? I couldn’t have thought of the word mimosa. You could talk to me about “Sleepless in Seattle” and I could picture the two actors, but I couldn’t tell you their names.
My first reaction was, “Omigod, is this early Alzheimer’s?” But by talking to my colleagues, I began to realize, of course, this is likely part of that composite long COVID. After about a month, the memory loss seemed to go away, but the fatigue persisted. There were times I would walk across our condo and just be exhausted. It really hasn’t been until about the last month and a half that I’ve really started to feel as if I’m fully back.
Just think of the following: If you look at coronavirus’ pandemic potential, between SARS and MERS , they killed 15 to 35% of the people that got infected. The good news was that they were not nearly as infectious as SARS-CoV-2 . But SARS-CoV-2 only killed a half percent of people, at most. There is nothing in the biological cookbook that says eventually we’re not going to see a coronavirus that is as infectious as SARS-CoV-2 and kills at the same rate as MERS and SARS.
Please get boosted. We’re already seeing the XBB booster may have some good protection.

A clue to China’s true covid-19 death toll
Some illuminating provincial data has quickly disappeared
Jul 20th 2023

On July 13th the authorities in Zhejiang, a rich coastal province, released what they probably thought was innocuous data about cremations in the first quarter of 2023. Around 171,000 took place during that time, up by 73% compared with the same period last year. The jump was undoubtedly caused by a wave of covid-19; the central government lifted all covid controls in December 2022. Just under 5% of China’s population aged 65 or older lives in Zhejiang. If one assumes that its share of covid deaths is similar (the disease mainly kills the old), a simple extrapolation suggests that there were 1.6m excess deaths across China in the first quarter, which is roughly in line with our modelled estimate of the country’s covid death toll. The central government, though, has acknowledged fewer than 84,000 deaths from covid on the mainland since early December. The data from Zhejiang was quickly removed from the internet.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jul/06/rollercoaster-of-a-sickness-how-a-horror-flu-season-is-catching-australian-families-off-guard

Dr Giacomin said once a low dose of hookworm is established in the human gut, they can live for up to a decade as a “kind of set and forget treatment”. “After those initial symptoms subside, people don’t even know they’re there anymore,” he said. But further research could focus on identifying a protein or a molecule that can be produced as a drug to mimic the beneficial effects the hookworms provide.

Not sure but it’s entirely conceivable that they coevolved as fairly safe commensals just like we host all kinds of bacteria in there without big trouble, in fact, if we murder the bacteria you’ve seen all those articles about gut microbiome and health. Even if they’re not completely benign it could be like sickle cell anaemia or thalassaemia and a part dose could prevent other diseases like malaria say.
