Hey All.

Those of us who have the unenviable job of moderating the Self Service Science Forum Facebook page have created a little discord server to try and stimulate a little science discussion and move away from constant moderation of lovely bots posting their video rubbish.

For those who don’t know, Discord is a “chat” type service which has web front ends as well as apps for pretty much all platforms. It started as a way of providing chat for the gaming community but has flourished to pretty much the major online chat platform these days.

It has separate groups, and threaded chats and supports decent moderation tools.
We have separate sections for SSSF, Tech Talk and Scribbly Gum.

To use Discord you need an account and you can get one at

It’s early days yet but we are trying to gauge interest for this going forwards.

It is there for people who don’t want to use Facebook and like a more structured thread based + chat social based group.

No facebook or any other social media account (other than a Discord account) is required to use it.

Because 2 sssf men* there blocked me on fb, because I challenged their misogyny and sexist crap. Years ago. One guy in particular is a person I really don’t trust. Lots of people here are friends with them. People here are also chummy with Dropbear and Squeezebabe. I think you are, too. The idea is to more broadly advertise on discord server lists etc .. Discord is a very large community of users.

I’m at the “landing pad” and there’s my name at the bottom with a long box I can type in.

But nothing to click to submit. I can type a post but no way to submit. The enter key just moves moves the text entry a line down, as it does here.

I may have been a tad over-the-top with my response to Boris re: the FB sssf thing and various people. I am usually on high alert regarding one person in particular. Most people see him as a “nice person”, but I don’t trust him. His past behaviour has tainted a lot of people, for me. My anxiety throws me a flaming rope to hold and it burns.

If it makes people feel better – I’m literally just there to make sure the server runs and does the things, and to assist with Discord troubleshooting.

I’m not there to make things run “my way, or the highway” – The server will run as close as possible to what it was previously – the usual things apply – no hate speech, no being an arsehole, and things of that nature. So yes, you’ll be able to swear – so far it is all adults and whatnot. This may change as it goes more public.

Discord does offer blocking – so if you don’t like someone, you can just right click on them and block them. This means that you don’t read anything they have said unless you REALLY want to (you actually have to click on their post and say “show me”)

If you have any questions about the Server and how it runs, and what it will do, or anything to do with it – you can message me on discord, and/or I’ll keep checking back in this thread and jump in when needed.

I’ve been visiting Discord in Safari for ages and suddenly there’s a captcha that I can’t prove I’m a human because it doesn’t show me what to prove. It must be the new update to Safari but I no have no way of proving I’m human.
