The Australian Space Agency says an unidentified object that washed up on a remote beach in Western Australia could be a part of a foreign-launched rocket.

An old lady with a little dog successfully outsmarted the best efforts of police guarding the area, as state and federal authorities try to work out what it is.

The canister washed up on a beach at Green Head, 250 kilometres north of Perth, where it was found and reported by curious locals. After a thorough inspection, no beer was found inside the object.

Well, it’s more remote than the beach just out in front of the houses. Right?

(shrugs) I don’t think “remote” normally means “completely away from buildings”. There are buildings on Pitcairn Island but it’s still pretty damned remote.

Having said that yeah Green Head’s not remote.

Remember when we sent that record into space? Maybe this is the return message. Now we just need to find a record player big enough.

Imagine a remote control for the building carpark.

Somebody on Reddit reckons it is the third stage of India’s PSLV rocket. A composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV).

Here is a video of the launch. You can see the stage separation at the 1:15 mark.

Aha! Composite as in fibreglass. Not composite as in carbon fibre.

We’re familiar with stuff falling from NASA rockets, but those black balls are composites using carbon fibre. This is the wrong colour for an American rocket part.

So India makes a great deal of sense.

Not fibreglass, more like carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer afaict
