We have some clowns around here whose cars have been tuned in a way that gives a crackle but I have assumed that this is a side effect. ie that this tuning has been selected for performance and the noise is incidental.

Turns out this isn’t the case. There’s no performance advantage. They are just choosing an option that will burn 10% more fuel per km and add to NOx pollution and make an annoying noise for … reasons? Is this shit legal?

It’s not a proper anti-lag system as it’s a very safe bet that those cars don’t have a fuel injector in the exhaust. Anti-lag is most used by high-performance rally cars, so that when the driver is off the throttle the AL gear burns some more fuel in the exhaust to help keep the turbo spinning, so that when the throttle is opened again there is very little lag to get back onto full power.
The popping thing that regular road cars do is just a wank.
