this word – cache

do you say ‘cash’. or do you say ca-shay?

Uh, neither.

how do you pronounce it then?

it doesn’t matter anymore.. the internet set me straight…

I have been pronouncing it incorrectly all this time…

well there ya go

A cache is a group of things that are hidden, and is pronounced like “cash.” Cachet can mean “prestige,” “medicine to be swallowed,” or “an official seal,” and is pronounced “cash-ay.”

none

I say Caysh

yes.

The way I say it is underlined.

Rhymes with … um … idk what it rhymes with but it sounds like someone saying “Kay” and then “sh”.

I have never been able to master that pronunciation notation.

But I think we agree.

IPA is a skill worth your learning.

when the Americans say it, it sounds just like cash… no ay sound at all…

mind you when I was there.. my name (which rhymes with cash) was always pronounced Tess…

they also thought I was saying cheese in stead of cheers, and come and talk to me when I said nothing…

Yeah, no doubt.

i’ll put it on the list just ahead of welding.

I also say caysh.

+1

Well I guess I don’t hear the word said much then, because I’ve never noticed anyone saying anything other than cash.

If you are caching do you say cashing?

Sure, what else would you say?

i defer to the ch rather than the sh.

Well I guess I don’t hear the word said much then, because I’ve never noticed anyone saying anything other than cash.

you obviously don’t hang with the right sort of people.

Australians

So anyway dv wanted a rhyme for this word “cache” the way it’s correctly pronounced but maybe we’ll just go with this.

The correct pronunciation of “cache” is fornication.

No. The correct pronunciation of Chat is “Cat”. As in “Ou et la chat?”
Oops. “Où est le chat?”

Cash is the correct pronunciation of cache.

Kaysh.

I think we’re mostly agreed on that one. Apart from a few outliers.

Is your sister jubilant?

I’d say she’s content rather jubilant. She enjoyed running the shop for a number of years and creating all kinds of nice things for it, but is happy to be moving on to other things.

And just relaxing for a while and enjoying her Pontville place without having to worry about running a business.

content rather jubilant = content rather than jubilant

sisters is mostly sibilant

Have I been saying succinct wrongly?

I’ve been pronouncing it with a ks sound like other words with “cci”, such as accident or vaccine.

But i’ve been hearing a lot of people pronounce it sussinct.

I pronounce succinct similar to you.

suck-sint

No, your pronunciation is correct.

Like succeed.

And who succeeds?

A beakless budgie.

A lot of people are wrong.

From the OED web page:

Definite sharp ‘k’ sound in the first syllable.

Other sources concur.

Thanks for backing me up, all y’all.

o’c‘m’on langwich evolves

I say it the other way …

I say it with the sharp ‘k’ sound in the first syllable.

anyway that would mean it had to be spelledt succinctiou

Sh is standard in the UK and Australia, Sk is standard in the US and Canada, but in all four places there is significant use of the alternative.
