Subject: Name That Aussie Lunar Rover

The Australian Space Agency, in partnership with NASA, is working with Australia’s space industry to design and build an Australian-made rover. It’s part of the Trailblazer program under the Moon to Mars initiative.

Drawing on Australia’s world-leading remote operations expertise, the rover will collect lunar soil, known as regolith. NASA will attempt to extract oxygen from the sample. This is a key step towards a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

The rover will go to the Moon as part of a future Artemis mission by as early as 2026.

The competition
Australians can enter a name that will be in the running to be selected for the rover.

Individuals and schools across Australia can enter a rover name, along with a brief explanation for choosing it.

To get Australian students excited and engaged in the opportunity, schools can download a presentation and supporting materials.

I like the idea.

We could send all of the really annoying and useless people there. Putin, Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, Peta Credlin, Scott Morrison, Donald Trump, Elon Musk (probably), the International Olympic Committee, whoever is running QANTAS and the RBA, in fact just about any economist…

We’re going to need a lot of rockets.

Ideally you’d need a shade over the whole thing and a way for the thing to clean off the moon dust. The dust is abrasive and sticks to everything electrostaticaly.

I’d say the design won’t be Australian, people with knowledge of this kind thing design AND build these things. We’re just paying for it.

Its ferociously hot in the sun , a more encompassing shade will be needed. Then you’ve got the lunar night.

I’d say build something that looks like a space 1999 eagle with wheels and that flys to the moon. When it lands , it lands complete, the wheels touch down straight away. The fuel tanks that took it to the moon get jettisoned with the engines. The tent shade inflates over the machine after landing then cures into that shape. An electrostatic brush on an arm cleans off the machine daily.

There’s a good one.

Of course, it’s all really about the ‘Australian Space Agency’.

Little, if any, of the design or production will be done in Australia.

But, wow, the opportunities for the ASA!

It will all require extensive consultation over a long period, none of which can be done in Australia, or by videoconferencing, so that’ll mean a lot of business-class flying, good hotels , expense accounts, entertaining, etc. etc.

Tough, but someone has to do it.
