Thinking about childhood and that seems to sum it up.

There are intense episodes of learning each day in the life of a small child, but the rest is just timeless and peaceful play of light and shadow.

There is no sense of impending doom.

Fast forward to my age and the impending doom tends to dominate.

The timeless and peaceful play of light and shadow is a rare treat once can enjoy, when one can briefly reconnect to the early vision.

That’s because, in addition to the other factors you mention, as children we just didn’t understand the world around us. Literal ‘babes in the woods’.

Never mind, just a personal observation that found no sympathy.

I occasionally think about what it will be like when it becomes clear that death is very near.

Then I remember that being dead is just like not being born, and I survived billions of years of that, so I worry about something else.

Ref: Phillip Adams. Although he might have stolen it from someone else, I suppose.

I think the Phillip Adams quote is something along the lines of “If you are worried about dying, just remember what it was like before you were born. It’s just like that.”

Exact opposite for me.

I had a sense of impending doom all the time from:
primary school – crown of thorns starfish
undergraduate university – Club of Rome
postgraduate university – cold war nuclear weapons
all the way until I was 53 years old – not enough money to retire on

The sense of impending doom only lifted on 5 Apr 2009, when Obama pledged US nuclear disarmament.

Complete freedom from doom now.
I know that the world is safe for me and for my daughter, for the whole of his/her life.
