I did have an idea for a site a bit like this, but it wasn’t going to be a game. I suppose the main disappointment is the fairly small dataset. (The phylogenies used are … defensible. )

There are about a million described species of insect, most of which don’t have common names, and indeed insects make up just about half of all known species, so it would be a tiresome game indeed if you literally put in every known animal.

You could make it Chordates only, which would get you to around 80000, or Chordates plus a curated list of non-Chordates.

Yeah I had a practice game like that where I got it down to Oniscidea (woodlice). I put in every synonym I could think of, looked up WP to find some specific kinds of woodlouse, even tried some generic and species names…

I entered Lion, and it gave the crown clade as Felidae.

The binary division in Felidae is clear as heck: felines and pantherines. So I put in Lynx to get the ball rolling on felines … and it still showed Felidae as crown clade. Be fucked.

I then put in Puma and it correctly showed that both lynx and puma were Felinae.

Swapped three guesses for a hint…

Today’s complaint:
Metazooa shows mantis shrimp as being part of Eumalacostraca. In real life, they are a different group called Hoplocarida. The crown clade of a mantis shrimp and, say, a hermit crab would be Malacostraca.

Yes, I gave up on it quickly for that reason.

Yeah I was not lucky.

So I’ve played a bunch of practice games and I’m in a position to summarise my constructive criticisms of this game.

1/ Massively multiple polytomy

In the real world, every phylogenetic branch occurs because of a speciation event. It is not impossible for a species to divide into three or more species effectively simultaneously: for instance, a huge storm could disperse a creature on to several islands, after which they develop into separate species. “Simultaneous” for the purposes of DNA comparison probably means “within 50000 years or so”. If two speciations occurred within a 100000 years tens of millions of years ago, it is going to be hard for modern researchers to work out which occurred first. Such a case would be a so-called “hard polytomy”.

Such cases, though, are rare and under full comparison of genomic sequences, most of these divergences can be dealt as showing each clade as having two daughters, and most of what’s left can be shown as having three daughters.

Metazooa has a habit of showing very large numbers of daughter clades even when a great deal is known about the order of branching.

Neognathae is the worst case.
It’s given twelve daughters:
Charadriiformes (seagull, puffin)
Hummingbird
Flamingo
Columbidea (pigeon, dove)
Passeriformes
Spheniscidea (penguins)
Strigiformes (owls)
Piciformes (woodpecker and toucan)
Falco (falcon and kestrel)
Accipitriformes (hawks and vultures etc)
Psittaciformes (parrots)
Galloanserai (game birds and waterfowl)

Neognathae is a big group that diverged from Palaeognathae (emus, kiwis etc) some 113 million years ago. Its major division is between Galloanserae (game birds, water fowl), and the rest, in Neoaves. That division is also ancient, around 100 mya, long before the extinction of the dinosaurs. It’s utterly non-controversial and Neognathae needs to be shown with two daughters (Neoaves and Galloanserea), not twelve. These two daughters can also be shown with two or three daughters, all the way down. I think the game designers must have just run out of fucks before they got to birds.

That’s the worst case but there are some other shockers.
Laurasiatheria is shown as having six daughters:
bats
pangolins
artiodactyls (pig, whale, sheep etc)
perissodactyls (horse, zebra etc)
carnivores
eulipothypia (hedgehog, mole)
All of this can be dealt with with branches of two or three.

Other cases: Xenartha and Afrotheria are more closely related to each other than to Boroeutheria, and should have the crown clade Atlantogenata.

It doesn’t bother me so much down the bottom of the table. Like wolves and coyotes are closer to each other than to jackals so they should technically get a crown clade. Koalas and wombats are closely related and should get a crown clade. For that matter humans are closer to chimps than either of them are to gorillas, so humans and Pan should get a crown clade, probably Hominini. But it’s the major divisions that bug me the most.

Xenartha and Afrotheria are more closely related to each other than to Boroeutheria, and should have the crown clade Atlantogenata.

2/ Paraphyletic or vague terms
Toad and bullfrog are not phylogenetically meaningful terms. They are just terms for unrelated sets of species of the order Anura that have a, well, toady or bullfroggy appearance. Inasmuch, you can’t firmly place them in a phylogenetic tree. Better to chose a particular toad (for instance the cane toad), a particular bullfrog (American bullfrog perhaps) so that its relationship can be more meaningfully shown.
There are other examples. Deer, antelope, snail.
Elk is a term that has its own problems. In Europe an Elk is Alces alces, which in America is called a moose. In America an Elk is Cervus canadensis, otherwise known as a wapiti.

3/ Incorrect placement
e.g. Cheetah is shown as not being in Felinae. I’m going to call that a straight mistake. Cheetahs and pumas are very closely related. Nightingales, they show as being part of Turdidae (thrushes) and that’s also a mistake.

4/ Big gaps
There are some huge omissions, whole phyla and orders omitted and some given scant coverage. I suppose this can’t be called an error but it does seem a missed opportunity to make it a more interesting and educational game.

Outside of Eumetazoa, they have exactly one critter: the sea sponge. This has the effect that if you see Eumetazoa as top clade, you know the answer is sea sponge. About half of the animal phyla are completely absent.

You don’t actually see the term Chordata because they don’t show any Chordates that aren’t in the jawed fish (including the jawed fish of the land such as yours truly). No lampreys, hagfish, lancelets, salps, pyrosomes, sea tulips, sea squirts. Not even any lungfish.
Like within Primates, there are no lorises, no marmosets, no colugos. There’s one, precisely one, New World Monkey.
Among the birds, no kingfishers, grebes, cranes etc.

Great concept for a game, and I was excited when I discovered it, but it’s poorly executed, as you say. I, however, CBA analysing it in such detail, so well done.
