Ah yes, Ch9 pinched it and used it for years as the intro/theme music for their cricket coverage.

So i was thinking about musicians, in particular guitarists & bassists. Name the ones you like…. that is if you want to…..

Mine are, Phil Manzenara & John Entwistle….

I agree with those choices but there are also others.
Bassists:
John Entwistle has a huge legacy in that so many others followed on from him. Jack Bruce can’t be left out as a leader into rhythm bass.
I’d also vote for Chris Squire.
Jack Bruce also played the double Bass as does Danny Thompson.

Hey BU, stuck anyone interesting lately?

Norman Watt-Roy grooves a complex 16-notes-to-the-bar bassline in Hit me with your rythym stick

Bruce, Clapton were the Cream of the crop, back in the day.

I was thinking rock for some reason, but yes Jansch, Renbourn and both Thompsons should be added, also Martin Simpson

John Smith and the Common Men is a fictitious band in the Doctor Who universe, mentioned in Season 1 Episode 1, An Unearthly Child. Susan is listening to their song on a transistor radio. The song played is actually Three Guitar Mood 2 by The Arthur Nelson Group which had previously been used in an episode of Z cars. The band is also mentioned in Eddie Robson’s audio story Fanfare for the Common Man.
The Doctor used John Smith as a pseudonym in many stories. In School Reunion, when he uses that name to introduce himself to Sarah Jane, she saidb“I used to have a friend who sometimes went by that name”. He said, “Well, it’s a very common name” and she replied “He was a very uncommon man.” And anyway that’s what Fanfare for the Common Man makes me think of.

I sing this song to myself everytime firewood magically appears on my verandah. More today. It was cold last night and I burnt more than usual. And then more turns up today.

I think I prefer the John Denver. It’s hard. The most pathetic rendering has to be the winner.

A chap i used to drink with occasionally, some years older than me, had been in the French Foreign Legion (there’s actually no shortage of Australians in the Legion, now or in times past).

One night, i asked him ‘John, they say that everyone joins the Legion for a reason. What was yours?’.

John said, in a slow Australian drawl which the Legion’s best efforts had never ‘educated’ out of him, ‘Ohh, i had to leave England in hurry. Had to disappear for a while.’

‘What happened, John?’

‘Well, i stabbed a bloke. Didn’t kill him, but i did stab him. So, i had to make myself scarce for a bit’.

Emboldened by drink, i asked ‘jeeze, John, why’d you stab him?’.

John narrowed his eyes, looked at me very directly, and said ‘Because he annoyed me’. (Turned out it was actually over some girl.)
