One of the guests at lunch today claims to have had great success with a garlic and chilli spray that has recently come onto the market, ready mixed in spray bottles at Bunnings.

I’m very sceptical but she insisted it worked.

As an insecticide or as a deterrent?

Well short of spraying it on the fruit fly it isn’t going to kill it.. so what was her reasoning? did she believe it made the fruit unattractive to the fruit fly? This latter is probably more likely than the former.

We didn’t go into details.

The standard bait being used in containers is the orange juice/bleach combination or yeast and bleach. (vegemite can be substituted for yeast).

Yates make a fruit fly bait with spinosad as the contact insecticide.

Also there is the older version of any of the above baits mixed with malathon. Then there is Naturelure which also contains spinosad.

Thanks BG. I shouldn’t even be on here. I’m too tired. Back tomorrow.
