Subject: Singularities don’t exist - Roy Kerr

Interesting article to read after Witty’s article.

“Singularities don’t exist,” claims black hole pioneer Roy Kerr The brilliant mind who discovered the spacetime solution for rotating black holes claims singularities don’t physically exist. Is he right?

“has no doubt, and never did, that when relativity and quantum mechanics are melded it will be shown that there are no singularities anywhere. When theory predicts singularities, the theory is wrong!”

Singularities occur all over the place in the maths describing the mechanical behaviour of things, and as you look closer at what is actually happening, every one of them disappears, so I have no doubt that will also happen in the mechanics of black holes, should we ever devise a way to observe what “really happens” inside them.

Yes it’s the most common view.

It would be more remarkable if they could find a physicist who thinks singularities are real.

That can only have been said by somebody who has never encountered renormalization in Quantum Mechanics.

What can I say, an electron is a singularity, and bears a very strong resemblance to a charged rotating black hole.

So, is Kerr trying to claim that electrons don’t exist?
