Subject: Mobile Phone Problem/Question
I need someone who’s more adept with the technology than am i.
My old Samsung Galaxy J3 mobile phone has suddenly ceased to make phone calls.
All of the other functions like internet etc. seem to be working, but when i try to call a phone number, it says that it’s ‘dialling’ for a minute or so, then just goes to ‘call ended’.
If put the sim card in another phone (Galaxy S8) that i have here, and it makes calls just fine.
So, it looks like there’s something on the J3 that’s stopping it getting the calls in or out.
I’ve checked everything i can think of on the phone, but with no improvement.
Can anyone suggest what’s going on, and how to remedy it, please?

If it has more than one slot for a sim a card try the other one.
I’m sure you’ve tried that, just a thought.

I can’t help, sorry.
Perhaps you could check the SIM contacts.
Perhaps you could reset to factory settings.

Thanks, MV.
I did the factory reset last night. No improvement.

Afraid it has only the one slot. There was. apparently, some of this model that did have two slots, but the second slot is blanked off in this one.

DJ, i did, eventually, notice on the paged you referred me to this little paragraph:

Perhaps the J3’s time was at an end, after all.
My mobile phone voice traffic is quite minimal, so i think it’s quite possible that the day came, and i just didn’t notice it.

It may be, but … how do mobile phones access the internet if not through the phone network?
And if the phone network is closed, how are you able to access the internet?
Can you enable WiFi on the phone and make calls through your home internet provider?

Are there any contacts you can clean
Conductive connections can become oxised
Failing that
Move the sim card in and out of the connection if the connection on the phone can’t be cleaned/ accessed

Failing that
See if you can look through settings and it should show that the sim card is connecting with a particular carrier
See if there’s something in memory like phone numbers and try to save onto the sim card to 1 See if it can see the sim card 2 force it to wake up and understand it has a sim card installed

Generally most machines can be fixed by carefully examining the outside of it, lightly tapping the enclosure then hitting the enclosure, bobbing up excitedly and shrieking at it. Never fails.

I think that the problem really lies with the age of the phone.
Dating from 2016, it seems, according to the various ‘status’ indicators that the phone displays, that it isn’t a 4G phone.
Neither, it seems, is the iteration i have of the Samsung S8 which i have, dating from 2018.
Now, with the 3G network switched off everywhere, the J3 from 2016 simply does not do phone calls at all, as it cannot connect to the voice call aspects of the network, and the S8 (which has LTE/3G/2G capabilities) will still do it, but struggles to maintain a connection to the network.
The solution seems to be a new phone.
I don’t need all the bells and whistles, and i’d rather avoid Nokia, or any of the Chinese brands like ZTE, so i may get a Samsung A05s for $297.

Who makes the Telstra lite?
No idea. I bought it some years ago from the Post Office. It was Very Cheap. I only need it as a contact phone if I’m away from home. Practically no-one has the number and it’s not turned on unless I’m out shopping in Hamilton and Mr buffy is home, or if I go to the bush without him. I suppose I will have to see what is now available.
