Seeing we have a diverse audience I thought people might like to share short indie videos they have watched and found interesting/amusing or whatever. I would prefer not music ones as we already have a music thread. But I have no control.

Based on what I observed, the bait that the fish ate represents a memory from his past, one that he wasn’t ready to let go of yet. Much like how most of us wished we were still with someone but then life hits you and that person leaves (by death or by other means) and you try hard to hold on to what’s left, the memories. The fish seems to somehow be a sign that its time for him to move on but he didn’t. He stayed stuck. In the process, he didn’t realize that there are people who wanted to make memories with him too. He remained fixated on the past until the old man becomes a memory as well and that’s when he started to appreciate him. Apparently, not many of us knows what we have until we dont.

LA VALIGIA || Stop Motion Short Film

An old man is sitting on the edge of a bed in a bare room with stoned walls, his face furrowed with deep wrinkles and his unkempt beard, gnarled hands still full of life, curved shoulders: he is alone and thoughtful. A small and ramshackle window with bars is the only outlet to the outside. In front of him he has a mysterious suitcase. Opening it the man finds himself in his hands the photographs and the personal effects of a whole life. Thus begins the sequence of memories and visions, synapses of the mind that come to life and invade the room of the elderly bringing him back in time, first adult then boy, finally child.

I’m quite taken by the films distributed by Northern Ireland Television – https://www.youtube.com/@NITVShorts.

I may have posted this one here, previously.

The Attendant, which is a whimsical, warm hearted feel-good short film about a man beating the system.

Frankie is a car park attendant at the spectacular Giant’s Causeway in Co. Antrim, one of Ireland’s natural scenic wonders. However, he has his eye on the future. Cathy is his friend and work colleague and she and her husband Paul are in trouble. Nevertheless, as Frankie always says: something will turn up!

A short silent film from 1929, directed and co-written (with Salvadore Dali) by Luis Buñuel called Un Chien Andalou, which contains one of the most disturbing scenes (possibly the most disturbing scene) of any film I’ve seen: a close-up of a man slicing his cut-throat razor through a woman’s eye (it’s actually a calf’s eye, but the setup convinces the viewer it’s the woman’s,) and a companion piece, L’Age d’Or (1930), also directed and co-written by Buñuel and Dali. While not as shocking, this one has a scene involving a cow sleeping on a girl’s bed.

Neither film has Michael Caine in it.

Good timing, you reminded me of this thread.

Been watching Star Trek Lower Decks lately, and a few times. It’s friggen’ hilarious and chock full of easter eggs & in-jokes. And being animated they can do things a live series wouldn’t get away with, such as one of my fave scenes was where one of the crew members was taken over by a ‘strange energy’ machine and is terrorising the planet they are in orbit around. He detaches his head, which then flies up to the USS Cerritos, and tries to beat the ship into submission. Then after a short while the head suddenly looks stunned and starts to fly back to the planet. The reason being that one of the other crew members, the cheeky one, is kicking the possessed crew in the ‘neutral zone’ over and over. And keeps doing it every time his eyes start to glow. I lolololed.

Also just started on Shrinking, which is about a shrink (surprise!) who just throws the rulebook out the window and treats his clients with whatever he reckons is best at the time. It’s well done and we’re enjoying it.

Season 2 of Silo has just arrived as well, it’s good so far.

I started watching Arcane, but got distracted and lost track of what was going on. It’s very well done so I’ll have to start again and put the attention in that it deserves.

Season 6 of What We Do In The Shadows is about halfway through, it’s not the best season but still okay. It’s also the last season.

Doom Patrol is quite randomly odd and worth a watch.

We just finished binge-watching Ted Lasso.
On the surface it doesn’t sound like it’d be that good a show, but it really is and on several levels.

Premise
Ted Lasso, an American college football coach, is unexpectedly recruited to coach a fictional English Premier League soccer team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience coaching soccer. The team’s owner, Rebecca Welton, gained ownership of the team in a divorce from her unfaithful ex-husband, Rupert. She has hired Lasso secretly hoping he will cause the team’s downfall and devastate Rupert, who cared more about AFC Richmond than anything else. Ted’s charm, personality, and humour begin to win over Rebecca, the team, and those who had been sceptical about his appointment.

Daisy, daisy….

I love movies. I love arty movies. I never “got” 2001:ASO until I watched it whilst high on LSD.

Then I got it.

Brilliant movie.

Saw A Clockwork orange for the first time at the Lumiere Theatre in Perth in my early twenties.

I wonder if the Lumiere still exists?

Pink Floyd’s The Wall, first time at the Omni Theatre, now called SciTech….

Mind blowing, both of them.

God it was good being young.

A series of videos about building a programmable computer out of ye olde electromagnetic relays.

I mentioned this kind of idea in a thread five years ago. I was kind of intrigued by the idea that all the elements in place for programmable computers using relay logic back in the 19th century but the pieces never came together.

So I got up to his completion of the register monitors and main bus and he says in the next video he will begin building the CU…

And that’s the last video he ever put up.

FWIW in first year electronics we built a working digital computer out of logic gates, complete with alu, ram, and cpu. The display was LEDs, but you could single step it and watch the instructions and data moving around and being operated on.

Not from relays, though.

That’s not really something I ever got from Michale Kaine performances… that he always plays the same character with the same style and voice. He’s no Gary Oldman, but I think he’s pretty versatile.

It’s just a really good movie… under-rated and underappreciated.

It also has some of the greatest “one shot”/unedited single shots or pseudo-one-shots ever filmed as well.

As a movie It’s impressive: technically, thematically, narratively, emotionally…..

Just watched “Children of Men”, again.
One of the greates movies ever made.Perfect movie for times when one is feeling morose and despondent….

And it has one of the most impactful set pieces ever committed to film…Sometimes called the “Miracle Cease Fire”

The first child born in the last 18 years; bringing peace to a war zone….
….for a moment.

I have that on my harddrive. haven’t watched it, but now I might. not now though. just finished 22 Bullets.

I’m the same – it’s been on the watchlist for years, waiting for a day when I have enough mental fortitude. Is it as crushing district 19?

I’m watching this. https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/news-series/insight/insight-2025/insight-s2025-ep12/2424128579531
It’s really interesting. Kinda comforting to know you’re not the only one that’s been gaslit by a GP.

It’s pretty crushing… but ultimately ends with a message of hope…or maybe better stated as a hopeless hope.

Depsite being an older movie (2006) a lot of the themes resonate today. There’s a sub textual emphasis on the mistreatment of refugees, for example. The whole movie takes place in a climate of authoritarianism supplanting democracy.

It’s not a light hearted film. Watch at a time when you can allow it to demand your attention.

But it does have hippy-dopefiend Michael Kaine with his crop in the background, so it isn’t all doom and gloom:

My sister recommended that film . I’ll have to watch it one day.

Heh, it reminds me of this photo that someone took in their car. Pure coincidence, but it looks like a huge insect is rampaging across the countryside.
