Subject: Yangtze giant softshell turtle

I haven’t really being hearing about turtle extinctions but it turns out that rather a lot of softshell turtles are in a spot of bother.

One of those that’s on the way out is the Yangtze giant softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei). The last known female died recently. It is possible that there are unknown individuals out there but given that, as the name suggests, it’s a huge critter with a narrow geographic range that has been extensively sought, there’s little realistic hope. Artificial insem efforts on the last female were unsuccessful.

The other surviving member of the genus is Rafetus euphraticus, the Euphrates giant softshell turtle, is also endangered due to dwindling habitat, pollution, and deliberate killing by fishermen to protect fish stocks.

Rafetus leloii, which inhabited Vietnam, may have been a separate species from swinhoei, or possibly a subspecies, but either way it went extinct in 2016.

Going through all the members of the family Trionychidae (softshell turtles), most have the status vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

Possibly extinct.

I’ve got no sympathy for them. Lazy fuckers couldn’t even be bothered evolving a hard shell.

So when I go to my one of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants in Brisbane, I should refrain from purchasing the lovely salt and pepper battered soft-shelled crabs meal, I suppose.

I don’t think eating crabs is going to help or hinder the life of a turtle.

But, but, they have soft-shelled in their name, so might be going extinct too.

I’m given to understand that a soft-shelled crab is one that has just moulted, rather than some particular species or genus.
