Well it was noted yesterday that some of the sweet potatoes in the ground were starting to shoot again, so it was decided it was harvest time. Holy moly batman! Two and a half 20L buckets later, we have a few sweet potatoes, not bad return from one spud, plus runners. The cool thing about sweet potatoes is that you can pull the tops off the runners and replant them into the soil, and a tuber will grow on the end.

The other cool thing is that the bed was chocker full of worms, big long squiggly worms, the size of small snakes. Well we called the ducks over and as we turned the lovely moist dark soil, we tossed a worm or 6 to the ducks. Didn’t they just love it! The 5 of ‘em must’ve consumed a hundred worms! Then there were the frogs and the toads… well the frogs were re-located to the pumikin patch and the toads well they just ran for their lives. That’s when the duck ate one, anything that moved across the grass was fair game from worms, to skinks, to the toad, to the mole-crickets.

Then we stepped back and let the ducks play in the fresh soil… crickets, cockroaches, everything was attacked by the ferocious ducks. They looked up at me from time and asked “more worms please?” so I would dig another chunk of earth over for them.

This morning when letting them out of the duk haus, they immediately went straight for the vegie bed, and looked quizzically at me “more worms please?”

well done on the sweet spuds.

well the new bed, which was formerly known as the sweet potato patch has now received a good handful of lime, and huge handful of blood and bone, 4 wheelbarrows full of our free-range home-grown compost and the ducks seal of approval.

It looks fantastic. In the next week or so, when the ducks have suitably fouled their haus, we will shift the old straw onto the patch, with some more blood and bone.

But before that, we ate pineapple.

Bought over 12 months ago….I don’t think it likes the area. Tends to throw up more of those sucker shoots than new leaves.

we have baby Tomatillos on the bush! Yay so happy!

also, in the PM’s garden, the Maize Corn has blackened tassles, but we need the kernals to really dry out if we want to make flour. The Thai Baby Corn looks ready to pick. Coriander is up, Basil is up, Kohl Rabi is up with the Radishes and Chinese Broccoli. The Thai Basil is booming along. The many Toms are looking good and there are a few yellow pear toms forming. The Spaghetti squash is growing, the cucmbers are growing. The Potatoes are all poking through the straw. The Cos lettuces are crazy and the ducks and Julia are just getting a few outer leaves to snack on. The Italian Spinach is growing. The Lemongrass has been divided once again. The patch of lemongrass in the Duk yard is where they lay their eggs now. The 12 different varieties of Chillies are up and some are flowering, even the Ancho and Poblanos are up. The two year old Thai Chillies have been pruned and are re-shooting.

well it appears that on the same day your tomatillo seeds arrived, some arrived from GF’s Mum… so we’re not sure… we have one plant going great guns and then two newer plants which look slightly different. So I would say that either 66% or 33% of the plants are from your seed and/or from the other supply.

well the plumbing is clear again… what a stinkin’ dirty Mike job that is! Oh well, it has to be done. The joys of living on a flat block where all the drains fall away at 1degree. Okay if it is just water, but if a rice grain gets down there! Then Bango, I’m out up to my elbows in grease and sh*t and feeling suitably filthy.

but I’m over it.

While I toiled away in the plumbing, I kept an eye on the gate for the Bat couple as we have another dying Flying Fox in our garden. They came, we chatted and we placed a very sick bat into his transport cage. :(

I also cleaned up all the palm fronds, turned the compost, gave it a sprinkle and took a foto of a frog.

12:00? nearly.

You’re lucky.. My drains run uphill. Which is why I planted a lot of trees. In wet seasons before the trees grew I had to pump them out to stop them running back into the house, which is on a slabon the ground.

again we got a second “free” mix of chile seeds under the auspice of “fiery hot mix” and here is a yellow banana style chile. I remember a workmate years ago, roasting and preserving in olyve oyl some banana capsicums that he discovered were not the normal mild flavour and were killer hot. He gave me one, and even I suffered.

these ones have a bite to them…

Just back from Bacchus Marsh with the silkie eggs..I bought 6. We stopped for tea on way. In the car on the way home the man has a look at them and theres 12 in the carton. OMG. The fella was obviously being generous but that means I have to somehow shove a dozen eggs under Lin Lin’s little body.
Well I did the switch and she didn’t flinch at me taking her 2 dud eggs away and putting the fertile ones in place, but oh heck she looks like that cartoon scene with a little chook atop a huge pyramid of eggs! hahaha!
I checked again just now and she’s shifted them about, fluffed herself up and has managed to get them all under and well covered. Her head is tucked right in and readying herself for the long haul job ahead. Obviously very proud of herself LOL!

daikon and kohlrabi – they grow too big – if they are +300mm (1’0”) long/broad and a lot more than 10 weeks old its probably woody.

poor drainage/irregular watering and acid soils will interupt growth and cause failure – altho not splitting afaik.

Speaking of housework…does anybody remember jusy how much stuff kids leave on the floor? Every game they have consists of 5 million bits and pieces and that’s beside the pillows, rugs, eating and drinking utensils and clothes. Was I firmer with my children or did I pick up blindly after them? I can’t remember.

The pest from hell!!!

Destroy any infected fruits by picking and placing in sealed plastic bags in the sun for at least three days before disposing. Cook or process any fruit apparently as yet unaffected. Not much else you can do apart from spraying everything until you don’t want to eat it.

just plucked our spaghetti fruit off the vine. And grabbed some Thai Basil.

Only one Spag Squash fruit though :( But heaps and heaps of Thai Basil! That’s going ballistic!
