some fisheye fun for pepe. Here’s a photo of a lagoon in the centre of the Palmetum. Brownsville has never looked greener!

and here is a shot for BG who posted some dam fine photos recently. Here’s our local Dam.

I like these guys that live in the lagoon, their old dead leaves now forming a grass-skirt, I wonder what lives amongst their foliage?

these I really like, they’re called Bat Flowers (Tacca chantrieri), used to see these in Lae, glad they are now spotted around here.

Hey I often said that my images on here were a bit soft and not as sharp… well it turns out that was my old monitor’s problem, not my re-sizing to fit p’bucket. On this ‘ere new laptop, all of my old shots and these new ones are smicko! I hope you guys are now seeing them as I am!
Here’s a Dragonfly

and here’s another, well two actually, they were flying around in formation like this, stuck together.

and here is a March Fly, in January??? Stupid fly

well I think it is a March Fly, could be wrong though eh?
and this sheila will eat ‘em all if they fly into her web.

Not what I call a March fly. Those buggers (march flies) give a shocking bite that itches for days and days.

I caught a few seconds of Greatest Home Video show last night and there was a barn owl just like your pic that was dancing. Well it was rocking backwards and forwards.

cropped the top and bottom a bit. But also the focal point is a long way off so the fish-eye feel is not so obvious. By the way my fisheye is an 8mm lens with a 180degree span. Sometimes my feet or my left elbow will appear in shot!

Hi, for all of youse who have maybe not been to Townsville, here are a few snaps of the city itself.
This first one is looking down at the CBD and the Port.

and this one is looking off to the left from the same spot. You can see Magnetic Island on the right, and Rowes Bay on the left. The airport is just off screen on the left.

and looking further to the left, you can see the big granite rock called Castle Hill on which I stood on top to take these photos. Airport off to the right.

not really pepe, it is the 14-42mm but set on 14mm if I recall… which is kinda wide but not specifically wide angled. I did crop a little bit from the top and bottom to give it a panoramic feel, but that was my intent while taking the shot. I thought this would look good if I just chop a bit off the top.

if you look at my photos, you will see the one that has died off. I also noted on Friday that they had a time-lapse camera on this one. we thinks the camera and subsequent light may have prematurely killed off the phallus.
And Linnaeus did not have anything to do with its discovery…

a while ago pepe, I purchased a 2x converter for my camera. My original idea was to attach this to my 300mm telephoto and therefore give me a 600mm lens and that way I could fotograph a pimple on the backside of a monkey a mile up a tree. Only problem was, 600mm of zoom on my 4/3rds sensor gave me in essence 1200mm of lens in old school 35mm terms. Just wayyyy too much for handheld work. I avoid the use of tripods.
But I could attach it to my 35mm macro and it would therefore give me a 70mm macro. Again, laziness on my behalf and no real camera savvy upstairs, I tried it once or twice and thought “meh” too hard basket. So the 2x converter was relegated to the camerabag and seldom used.
So one day recently, I remembered my old 2x converter and extension tubes for my old filum camera, and learning that the 2x converter plus my 35mm macro actually gave me a 1:1 sensor ratio with the bug in question, and inspired by a new project I have started, I brought out the new 2x converter, practised real hard and discovered I could handhold the new beast without too much camera-shake.
So I learned the ancient art of bug-whispering and asked a few of my garden friends to pose so eloquently for my new found confidence.
The results are part of my new project and what you see before you.
To add; in reality, this guy was on a leaf, I removed said leaf and placed on a table at a comfy height. I sat in chair, and rested camera on table, braced both my elbows and held on firmly to the camera and from only millimetres in front of the lens, I pulled focus.
I also had to remove my left hand to poke this guy with my finger in order for his horns to become erect.

a full and complete explanation – thanks – they are rare these days.
i did actually want to know as well because my camera has a zoom lens that both unbalances the camera and seems to defy macro focusing.
your 2x additional lens and the resting on the table is resulting in images that come from science fiction.

He could well be in the running to grace my bathroom wall.
I can just imagine the reaction from anyone scared of frogs. He’s a bit sinister looking. :)
He could be positioned so he’s watching them on the loo.
Good lord, imagine being scared of frogs =/ Mind you, I find it impossible to fathom that people are scared of something as tiny and adorable as a mouse – horses for courses, I suppose.

Panoramic shots are often stitched together in-house camera programs that make for a big wide screen landscape!
This shot is actually just one photo. taken with not a “panoramic” setting, but with an 8mm super wide fish-eye lens. I cropped the sky so that it gave a huge widescreen appearance!

It isn’t a blue banded bee but yes it lays its eggs in the blue banded bees brood. It is why it is called a cuckoo bee. However it is also a good buzz pollinator.

the answer is no. This gal is a Cuckoo Bee and she lays her eggs into the ‘nests’ of other bees. The young hatch and consume the other eggs and baby bees.

I will admit, the 35mm macro is a cracker of a lens, but it is only f3.5 and with the 2x converter as seen here it is a f7.0. I would like the 50mm f2.0 macro that Olympus makes…. oh yeah!

perserverance brings results – i reckon you have produced some notable macro shots this year..
however your photography was brilliant before this year.
in fact, the captions in new guinea were probably a bit ‘edgier’ – and, in a way, your subject matter has grown more conservative now that you are back home.

when the Queen Ant goes a wandering it is not like a Bee. I mean followed by a swarm all trying to protect. When the Queen Green Ant goes-a wandering she tends to be quite vulnerable and definitely alone. It seems all so wrong especially when you see how defensive the Soldier ladies can get. So yeah this spider had made the capture an hour or so before I came along. In fact, GF said to me at the end of the working day “Hey you gotta see this spider with a queen?” So we thought maybe the situation would be different… but when we got to our Pandanus plant the Spider was still holding on and the Queen was well and truly dead. Once, a while ago the spider dropped his prey when I got too close so I was keen this time to move in quickly, get the shot and leave without being too much of a disturbance.
Each afternoon I would guess there would be 7 or 8 of these Lynx spiders on the pandanus… today because of the rain, all of the spiders were underneath the leaves getting shelter.

clarity and definition was my sole aim. Beauty, well that’s in the eye of the beholder and Julia is a pretty cool chook! This was taken at the end of the day, you can see the shadow of the setting sun behind a mango in her eyeball, but the light was bright enough for no need of flash. Just waiting for her to sit still for a second…. she’s fidgety!

I have to amend my first comments about this photo. When I first looked at it I only saw the water and the kinda concave black section. I thought I had it all in frame and I didn’t scroll across or even see the object that the water was coming from. BG’s comment made me look at it again and I got the whole picture this time. I liked it better first time round if anyone cares. I liked them on their side and the mystery as to where they were actually coming from was intriguing.
Just thought I’d clear that up.

they can be. Although the blue form is not the common one. They often have blue flecks in their dark upper, and sometimes can be quite yellow underneath.
Longicorn Beetle, and here you can see the difference between the macro lens (here) and the telephoto lens (snake shot), plus also the fact I was 2 metres away from the snake and 2 inches away from this guy.

I thought I had it all in frame and I didn’t scroll across or even see the object that the water was coming from. BG’s comment made me look at it again and I got the whole picture this time. I liked it better first time round if anyone cares. I liked them on their side and the mystery as to where they were actually coming from was intriguing.
Just thought I’d clear that up.
seeing the whole picture does help.
Pom, your PC settings maybe a bit short on the pixel width. This image is around 1056 v 300 so you maybe selling your screen a little short.
LOL. I’m sure something is short. Our knowledge of computers is very short. It’s miniscule actually. Wot’s broke stays broke until some poor relative with computer skills happens to visit. Must say that we have a new computer tech who’s opened a workshop in our tiny town and we could very well be his biggest customer.

they are clever birds, they know what a camera is and they tend to place an unwelcome stick between you and them. I did have to follow them from tree to tree, but they were amongst Rainbow Lorikeets in the Calliandra, and I was whistling and chirping and making them feel at home….
I got lucky I guess.

it does complicate the image. it’s a bit like fireworks going off in the background.

Yes I gave but it isn’t a problem. First the bat has to bite or scratch me, which it was nt in the mood to do. Second it actually has to have the virus, which it most likely didn’t.
From the CSIRO: Australian health authorities suggest lyssavirus poses a low public health risk. However they strongly recommend that anyone scratched or bitten by a bat should immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and contact their local doctor.
Research at the United States’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows the vaccine for classical rabies can protect against lyssavirus.
The vaccine does work but if you do happen to get bitten before you have it you then have to have a whole course of it.
I personally wouldn’t like to trust one not to bite.

I’d say you’re absolutely right! I was already beginning to suspect that my cicada idea was off the mark when a google image search showed that all cicadas seem to have transparent papery wings.
How did you manage to ID it?

Wow, I didn’t know that. Are you our resident bat afficionado?
I wouldn’t say I was an afficionado at anything much.
I do things with plants but then so can a lot of people.
there’s lots of things I know about or can fix but then I expect that the same exists for many.
roughbarked said:
I do believe you are just not seeing them or their colony has been compromised. I’d have to read up on every bat to answer the migratory question but as far as I can tell they tend to stay in a colony and not migrate. Though this may not apply to all species. Considering that microbats make up a quarter of all mammal species in Australia, there are quite a few species.
Ooh, interesting. I’ve wondered about this too. For the first two summers we lived in our current house, we would regularly see microbats at the local dog park if we went at the right time in the evening. then we had two or three summers when we didn’t see any – and this summer I’ve seen a single bat.
We don’t go to the park at that time of night as frequently now, so hopefully there are still plenty & we’re just not seeing them! I did try to find some kind of local bat enthusiast group to ask if anyone knew the species etc, but I couldn’t find any such group. I also keep meaning to email the council and suggest they put up bat boxes in the park, but I haven’t ever gotten around to it.
This park is in the middle of suburbia, right next to a train station.. I was amazed when I first saw bats there! I’d only ever seen microbats in the south-west of WA, in areas with lots of bushland. Lovely to have them in the suburbs!

Probably not at the moment! I suspect they might visit my night-flowering cactus, which is going to be removed when the house is demolished :(
When the new house is finished, though, I would like to find a spot to put up a bat box or two – the park is only one street over from us, so hopefully they’ll find us.

Cacti are relatively easy to propagate or transplant. The flowering may not occur again for many years however.

Yep, the monster. We’ve offered it to council, the Botanic Gardens authority, and tried just offering it on Freecycle (in case anyone wants cuttings). No takers, unfortunately, but it’s hardly surprising!

This one is about two storeys high. Council estimated it would cost about $7000 to move it. D’oh! I thought it would look quite nice in a local park :D (probably a massive litigation risk, come to think of it)

A polaroid???????????
Oh yeah, they’re making them again. They look a bit modern and take a smaller image but it is still oh so instant! This shot is a scan of a shot I took earlier today :)
Polaroids .. the quality has improved I see.

I heard polaroids were making a come back. Happy Birfday PM. D is Aquarius too but he just turned 69. You have a way to go to catch up to him.
Apparently reel film is on the way back also although Kodak (the original inventors) has gone bust.

the School of Arts might use film, but digital is in to stay mainstream :)
still some b/w film enthusiasts around though. i gave away all my film cameras and processing equipment to the local high school, as they still have an operational darkroom.

I also have a 120mm Holga film camera and yeah stupid Kodak gone bust… no such thing as a kodak moment, it will have to be a fujimoment!

bon008 said:Probably not at the moment! I suspect they might visit my night-flowering cactus, which is going to be removed when the house is demolished :(
When the new house is finished, though, I would like to find a spot to put up a bat box or two – the park is only one street over from us, so hopefully they’ll find us.
Can’t you transplant the cactus? Or are you referring to the monster down the back?Cacti are relatively easy to propagate or transplant. The flowering may not occur again for many years however.
If it’s the one I’m thinking of (the monster down the back), I wouldn’t go near enough to try to propagate a piece as I have no wish to become the human pincushion, LOL!

The familiar term ‘kodak moment’ won’t mean much to the younger crowd.

There’s a lot of things I say that even my kids don’t understand..like ‘ there’s a louie on the windowsill’, ‘back o burke’ and several others that I say but aren’t coming to mind at this hour.

WHY are these things making a comeback?
I guess film is making a comeback because of the popularity and cheapness of digital cameras. Every man and his dog is a photographer now and everyone has to capture every moment in digital. So by having sooo many cameras out there, there is a small minority who want to actually learn the skill of being a photographer and film and cameras like Holga and Lomography can certainly teach you the basics. Perhaps what really is a minority movement actually has some depth in numbers???

As far as polaroids go it’s so there is an instant picture to hand over to whomever is wanting same. There are times when it’s good to be able to have the proof of a photo in your hand. Hope I’ve explained that ok.

That’s not how I see it although you’re probably right. I just feel that there are times when you would like to be able to take home a pic of an occasion. Perhaps when only your friend had a camera and you didn’t.

I remember badly wanting a polaroid camera as a pre-teen/teenager. It just seemed like it would add to the fun and spontaneity of sleepovers and nights out. I suspect I would still feel the same way if I was that age now – digital is all very good, but it’s easy not to go to the effort of looking back over them, printing etc.. Something to be said for a quick snap that can go straight up on the fridge etc?

Wouldn’t the person who took the photo want it too? And you can’t just order a second lot of prints…
But unless you’re trying to get two pics of a streak of lightning you can always take a second.

yes. This is a problem with Polaroids. No negative, no reprints.

yeah but. No but. Not every village in the highlands of New Guinea has a scanner, but a polaroid there would be a cracker!
