Nations Are Undercounting Emissions, Putting UN Goals at Risk.
Because of lax rules, national inventories reported to the United Nations grossly underestimate many countries’ greenhouse gas emissions. The result, analysts say, is that the world can not verify compliance with agreed emissions targets, jeopardizing global climate agreements.

hey are supposed to be the climate-savers’ gold standard — the key data on which the world relies in its efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and hold global warming in check. But the national inventories of emissions supplied to the United Nations climate convention (UNFCCC) by most countries are anything but reliable, according to a growing body of research.

The data supplied to the UNFCCC, and published on its website, are typically out of date, inconsistent, and incomplete. For most countries, “I would not put much value, if any, on the submissions,” says Glen Peters of the Centre for International Climate Research in Norway, a longtime analyst of emissions trends.

The data from large emitters is as much open to questions as that from smaller and less industrialised nations. In China, the uncertainties around its carbon dioxide emissions from burning coal are larger than the total emissions of many major industrial countries. And companies preparing data for its carbon-trading system have been accused of widespread data fraud.

In the United States, an analysis published this month of the air over the country’s oil and natural gas fields found that they emit three times more methane — a gas responsible for a third of current warming — than the government has reported.

So…maybe Australians aren’t the most evil emissions-per-capita villains on the planet, as has widely been pronounced.

Perhaps we’ve been silly enough to win that titel for ourselves by, once again, being the only bunnies silly enough to actually tell the truth.

Yeah! We should all talk bullshit, and it might go away.

Yeah! We should all talk bullshit, and it might go away.

Not what i meant, and you know that, of course.

And, of course it won’t go away if we join in the telling of lies. We should keep telling the truth, and accept whatever dishonour goes with that reporting, and use it as inspiration to do better.

But, perhaps we shouldn’t accept the crown of ‘worst’ so readily as we have done in the recent past, acknowledging that there’s almost certainly countries worse-per-capita than us in the world (and i’d bet that the US and other likely suspects would top the list, if the truth was told).

There are lots of scientists and others worldwide telling the truth. It is those who think it might cost them, plus the ignorant, the arrogant, and scared governments who are not listening.

The nature of our economy makes us a high emitter. Same for Canada. There’s not a lot of shame being compared to Canada.

Well, maybe we are the most evil emissions-per-capita country in the world. But, there’s no way of knowing that for sure, now that it’s been revealed that the rankings are based on a load of bullshit.

It would seem that any assessments of per-capita emissions, up to now, at least, are worthless.

I’m used to being, along with other Australians, left holding the bag when our own government tells fibs to us. I just don’t like it when we get tarred and feathered because other peoples’ governments tell fibs to some outfit in Norway.

like I said before;
the grift is like a shell game
wherein they move the goal posts
by changing the terminology & criteria
now shifting the blame around thus setting
peoples against one another in a blame game.

per capita depends upon the number of people involved
…if Australia has a lower population density it stands to reason
that each individual bears a higher percentage of individual blame.
