better start a new year for pics..

The sunflowers will bloom soon..
They are planted in a 3 inch gap between the path and a root barrier and I didn’t think they would get this big.
In the left corner is the spaghetti squash and that little visable fruit is heaps bigger today.
Eggplants to the left front.

And whats behind them..

Yacon to the back, left, and corn behind the mandarine tree.

Yes Longy forewarned me too and that’s why I put it in that back corner, it can keep reshooting there. Eventually I will grow it right across behind the mandarine tree and it can stay there.
I do wonder though, if it will have the same habit as the sub tropics. Temperate clime here.

I think part of my problem was that you are supposed to dig them after the top dies back, but mine never did. It just kept growing bigger and bigger.

Apricot jam :)

Chopped 2 kg and added one cup of water and the juice of one lemon and simmered for about 10 mins.

Added 2 kg sugar and boiled for approx’ 30 minutes.

5 mins to setting time I added a tablespoon of kirsch, it gives it a slight almond taste to the finish.

7 bottles.

Now having a water bath for 35 mins.
(for extra safety and longer keeping)

Interesting that you added water. My Mum always told me never to add extra water. She said that just wash the fruit and then cook slowly to begin with. Same when stewing fruit.

I just remember my mum insisting on doing that so I’ve always added it.

And she would cut the top of the apricot off, where it attaches to the branch.

I plan to make a couple jam slices next.

The 2nd batch of apricot jam is about to be made :D

We ate the peaches…….

I love apricot jam. I went to buy some fresh apricots the other day and a man beside me said not to buy them because they were terrible. He had had some previously. I took him at his word because the apricots we get up here are, for the most part, terrible. I only bought the 2 that I had already put in the bag, just for a taste. I bet you guessed already that they were excellent. I was fuming. I now have to wonder about that man and his off the planet advice. You know what else is a pain. I can’t get back into town to get some more because everywhere is flooded.

One thing, capsicums sure love it here.
The green ones are big but I’m waiting for them to turn red. The long Hung’ yellow peppers are fab in salads.

This tomato ( grafted) was so covered in leaf that the fruit were too shaded so I removed most of the leaves.
Now they are ripening.

My world according to Yeehah. Hanging out with the fairies at the bottom of the garden :)

Next cactus flower :D This one took weeks to open.

Hungarian Long Yellow, says on the seed pack.
I get the seeds from the local Italian Deli. They go wonderfully on a cheese platter, or a pizza, salads or sandwiches. Anything really. I use heaps.
They grow so quickly I only need the one bush. Last year I had four bushes and there were too many fruit.

I am not going to plant climbing beans, ever again! Not after my last lot nearly pulled down a neighbours olive tree! LOL..

Besides, the bush/dwarf beans are more tender :)

I’d bin the affected leaves but keep an eye on the plants in case it continues. If so then it might be better to remove the affected plants. I suspect though that they are water logged and may not recover unless the soil gets a chance to dry out a bitl.

Pics of the river on our walk this morning. The level peaked ovenight and is already dropping.

Our walking path is under in this first pic.

The water level went up over the path to the edge of the rocks.

Path dissappears again.

The flooded ford crossing.

Yesterday evening the water level rose to the bottom edge of this Werribee River sign.

There was Lucky, some of the ones nearest the river evacuated, but none inundated, thankfully.

People will want river views..

Phew that is good news….thanks.

Hopefully no major damage?

Well apparently the river is going to rise again and even higher when they release catchments further out west and north.
Towns central and central west Vic are flooded and that water has to go somewhere..

They are so tall now I had to hold my camera with my arms straight up and take a blind photo.

Immature spaghetti squash just hanging in there. There’s several and I hope they ripen before the vine secumbs to leaf mould.

Powdery mildew. Just been reading about the squash and apparently they won’t ripen for some months yet. I will have to treat the mildew now then.

I had picked them Veg, well a dozen others that were ready. I left those three to mature some more and that’s what all the rain did. They lost their petals and hung their heads.

Dogs are so funny about new stuff in their domain. Sometimes we get woken in the middle of the night by ZeeZee barking. We let her out and she barks at a wheelbarrow in the middle of the yard that wasn’t there last night. She is ok if we remember to introduce her to these things before it gets dark.

She does it inside the house as well, depending on what’s out of place.

Not enough light in the fernery? Depending on the type of cycad that could be the prob, or maybe lack of nutrients – might need fertilising.

One thing that emerged after his haircut, how much of a barell shape he is, he’s fat!

No more little cubes of cheese from the salad bowl leftovers..

I kept his fur and my friend with the spinning wheel said it’ll be great when spun into wool. I have to keep all his hair trimmings now before he loses the lovely gold colour and starts going grey.

red just like HPs, but fatter then HPs. I used to walk Oscar twice a day, he was on diet food and I would walk him once a month to the vet to the “scales of death”. He would step on, would always be 28kgs and everyone in the vet waiting room would laugh at poor fatty Oscar.

What colour was he? I have had 3 black cocker Spaniels over the years.

red just like HPs, but fatter then HPs. I used to walk Oscar twice a day, he was on diet food and I would walk him once a month to the vet to the “scales of death”. He would step on, would always be 28kgs and everyone in the vet waiting room would laugh at poor fatty Oscar.

Yes it’s time. You need a new dog. You’re settled in Towntown now. Perfect town to raise a new dog.

but the birds???

One thing that emerged after his haircut, how much of a barell shape he is, he’s fat!

No more little cubes of cheese from the salad bowl leftovers..

I kept his fur and my friend with the spinning wheel said it’ll be great when spun into wool. I have to keep all his hair trimmings now before he loses the lovely gold colour and starts going grey.

you could knit him a cardy!

Our Oscar was 28kgs… beat that!

wo, fat cocker spaniel! Max is 18 kg.

Oscar was big boned… and tall!

Gees his fur is thick, but we’re getting there…

Nearly finished but then I got visitors so I let him have a break then clean up the little tufts later.

That is soooo gorgeous!

He is a cutie. I bet he feels a bit cooler too!

I always wished I could do that with the rottie. Miss Stubborn she was – if she didn’t want to go for a walk, she’d just sit, and no amount of shoving (or laying out a trail of shmackos) would move her. Or you’d be in the middle of a walk, and she’d choose the way she wanted to go next, and there was no changing her mind. Picking her up wouldn’t exactly have solved the underlying discipline problem, but it would have made life easier!

Now her joints are too sore for much of a walk, so on a sore day she gets pushed around the neighbourhood in a little cart mum bought for her. It’s lined with her leopard-print dogbed – she looks like Madam Muck!

One job I could never have done would be working with the RSPCA. Stories like that make me feel sick in the stomach. They had a segment on 7:00pm Report tonight, on an Aus woman who is working to save the bears in captivity and I don’t even know where. I turned it off after the warning on what we were going to be viewing.

It’s quite hard to pick a suitable dog actually.
I don’t like little dogs that yap all the time, nor anything with ‘terrier’ in it’s brand.. nor one’s too big to handle, or too fluffy..

But I’ve had them all and loved them to bits :D
I had a cream Lab named Jock that could easily pull a trailor load of bricks, a tiny chihuahua named Tina it’s constant companion, a red kelpie, a dingo named Red even, shepherds and Aust terriers..a gorgeous red setter and many others inbetween.
I’ve never been without a dog even when I didn’t own one…

I’ve been busy.. got a good amount done out the front, cooked a feast , lamb shanks in plum sauce and an apple and rhubarb pie, and attached some pots on the fence for strawberries.
Another row of pots will go on the other side.

Thanks Bon. I scrounged around and found 3 more to put beside those, it’s a line of 12 now. But I can get plenty that size out of the pot’s recycling container at the local nursery. There’s hundreds.
I’ll scrub ‘em with a dustpan brush and soapy water and I need to secure the wire mesh waving about in the wild wind’s we get here too so I scounged for a couple tall star pickets to drive in. I don’t know what I’d do without cable ties!
Also they are in the most exposed and sunniest spot so I’ll put some water crystals in the mix.

I could put a few different things in them I suppose, lettuce and parsley, small herbs.

Pity we have a wooden house. Water runing off wall mounted pots is a no no. I even had to give up my verandah hanging baskets because they dripped onto the railing.

Already fixed :) I jammed some old pots in behind them but I reckon a piece of wood underneath will secure it bettter. I have the wood.
I have filled and planted some of them with ‘sweetie’ strawb runners and now I have, as Dinetta put it, ‘conked out’ LOL

Hmm. I wonder if there’s a ‘Cooks Anonymous’ group I can attend. Before the oven carks it and the kitchen explodes and the cook dies from overwork! :D
Sourdough wholemeal blob moster ready for the oven.

But it kept growing and got too big for the tray.

So I cut third off and placed it into a small loaf tin

Sourdough wholemeal blob moster ready for the oven.

But it kept growing and got too big for the tray.

So I cut third off and placed it into a small loaf tin

I have noticed that supermarkets are displaying sourdough lately. It’s not cheap but it must be popular.

The quality varies considerably. The latest suprmarket find of ours is Helgas Pumpkin and Five Seed (or something like that) bread. Not sourdough but very nice.

What will you do with the boys?

I’ll be sending any boys to a bloke in Kynton, a friend of youngest daughters boybriend, who has heaps of chooks on a large property. He keeps the good ones and old ones he uses for the table.
Eggbert will be going there too one day when I get some crosses with him and the bigger isa browns, or when the council knocks on my door, whichever one comes first.

I’ll be sad to see Eggbert go though, he has turned out to be a very good rooster. He has stopped the girls squabbles and is very protective of them, even going for me once when I went to heard one hen into the pen. He crows once a day. When Max hears Eggbert go off he charges out there and chases the rooster and he stops crowing.. could be why he’s quiet lol!

The little family are lovely and obviously doing well.

Your zygo is also doing well. Mine finished ages ago. After the miner birds wrecked them, that is.

I was using Pest Oil spray this morning and I’m sure white fly was mentioned on the pack. I was working on aphids.

That chick pic was several weeks back when night temps dipped into the minus.
Zygo gets some worm wee monthly. even in winter.
The strawbs were beautiful and sweet. I blasted the w/fly with water and picked them, then white oiled it. It gets air movement from a wind tunnel space from behind a shed, and on warmer northerly wind days they really get blown about. They are on a north facing wall. :D

north is the warmest side so maybe they will finish early.

I thought you have only be hanging with the Orchard crowd for a year or so? I would quantitate “great success” as growing in a mature fruit tree bearing ample fruit and surviving to old age…

A couple years now and we have a great fruit tree nursery going for growing rootstock and a grafting shed nearby. After record rain earlier this year some of those rootstock shot up with trunks as thick as a forearm and they were chopped straight off and grafted. I thought.. if that works I’ll be amazed.. and they did. Some are getting transplanted today.

It’s a great reuse of something that was heading for the tip. It’s very heavy and plants won’t get blown around like the plastic one allows. Once I get the glass cleaned and the brackets and shelving in it I will load it up with my seedlings. The doors slide easily and I can leave one open during the day, and it’ll be easy to close and cover it with a blanket on frosty nights.

Thanks BG. They are very strong. The people I give them to say because they’re pretty they’re leaving them where they can see them and not forgetting to take them with them to the shops. Good! One friend had a great idea, hang them on a coat rack by the door :)

Too pretty to use for shopping.:)

My shopping bags live in the back of the van along with hay, tools and assorted junk. I live in fear that one day a big cockie will jump out just as the checkout chick opens one.

Pink flowered rhody placed to hide the shed. I can see it from the kitchen widow.

These A. Cognatas are now 3 mt tall and starting to thin out. I reckon another few months and they will come out and be replaced with the actual dwarf ones. Or rhodys. Or whatever grows in arvo shade that’s tall enough to hide the fence.

And guess what I got today .. 5 new chicks :) These will repace my ageing isa browns in a few months. They’re wyandottes, one silver laced, two crosses and two whites. Males can go back to the breeder. He is having a go at feather sexing so I hope he’s right.
I’ve popped them into the aquarium and they are warm as toast in there.

They are sooooo cute :)
When I checked them the temp wasn’t high enough for them as they were huddled under the light. So I swiped Max’s heat pad from under his bed and put the aquarium chick house on it. It’s warm enough now :)

I can’t see why they wouldn’t, they’re only wattle trees in minature. These ones were supposed to grow to half a metre high, only!

I have enquired about them at our nursery. They were very willing to get them in for me but said that others they had brought in for other gardeners had lost them to humidity. I took that as a “not very possible.”

I do remember you saying that about them earlier now. Pity, they are beautiful.
