Subject: Significance of gravity waves

Read on Quora:

“I concede that gravitational waves were real, when they were detected by the LIGO observatory, even though the observation shot nearly every string theory pretty much all to heck.

A lot of graduate students ended up having to start their PhD process over, from scratch, because of that observation.”

Is that true?

How come the pop-sci people never talk about it (that I have seen)?

This article addresses gravitational wave measurements as a test of string theory, specifically in relation to LIGO (but it’s from 2017):

Tying loose ends? Gravitational waves could solve string theory, study claims

It certainly lowered the ceiling for the maximum possible strength of superstrings. I’m not aware that the superstring theory people just gave up and went home though.

> String theory predicts that, during gravity wave generating events, ripples should also be travelling through the extra spatial dimensions and that there should be subtle interactions between the standard waves and those hidden from view. If there are extra dimensions it would lead to another mode of shrinking and stretching, this would produce a “breathing” effect, superimposed on the main gravitational wave.

Weird. Paper at https://arxiv.org/pdf/1704.07392

If I was younger, I’d love to read that.

To see if it can shed any light on the alternatives of large extra dimensions and/or the possible existence of a parallel 3+1 dimensional braneworld.

For the second one it was pointed out to me that, since gravity leaks into other dimensions, dark matter doesn’t have to reside in our universe. It may exist in a parallel braneworld.

If the New Zillanders and the Seth Efficans stopped shagging sheep and just swapped vowels, they could speak proper Australian words.

D’you think they’ll ever get around to it?
